Does someone know the colour codes for the gold and brown 2 tone? That looks tough and I'm thinking of adding the brown to my gold 7.

that color appears to have been GSL-SE only, and off the top, only on cars with the shaded glass and painted mirrors. i think that color appears on other cars, the FC too, but other than that i don't know anything more than you. i had one too, it is a really nice color, and looks great with the grey interior (mine was red, and it kind of clashes)
as to why the late GSL-SE's get a couple of special colors (PZ black is the other one), the shaded glass and painted mirrors (and taller gears), is a mystery. its almost a special edition, but you would never know it existed unless you have one, or spend WAY too much time in the parts catalog... it does make for a very nice car though. |

That's a very interesting question as we have no information on the two tone cars. Were they in fact stamped with two color codes? Was it just one code with the second color added as an option? This is definitely worth looking into!
Two tone silver colour codes on the build plate actually changes between the 1984 (late 83 to late 84) and 1985 (late 84 to late 85) model years. "QK" for 1984 "JR" for 1985 They are both the same....Sunbeam Silver K3 base with Tornado Silver K8 accents. Two tone gold colour code on the build plate for all model years is QY. The individual colours are Antique Gold P7 for the base and Havana Brown T5 for the accents. |
Glad that was cleared up! Thank you for posting the information about the two tone cars!

pic is from the 1983 brochure, but colors are probably the same

and this is one of the reasons there has been no follow up to the 79-80 post, the two tone silver isn't in the brochure, the parts catalog lists a two tone, QB, which is different from QK and JR....
totally possible we're missing a brochure, there are a TON of them https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...99677158af.jpg |

totally possible we're missing a brochure, there are a TON of them Japan never got the silver two-tone. Those cars only went to Australia, NZ, UK and continental Europe. Japan only got the gold two-tone, while Australia and NZ only got the gold two-tone for the series 3, not the series 2.5. Not sure about Europe though - they definitely got the gold two-tone in series 3, and judging by the Australian offering, the gold was probably Japan only in 1983. That QB listed in the parts catalogue for series 3 has always been a mystery to me. Which section are you referring to? I came across this in a page for body stripes (section 5080). This shows the stripes that go above the painted sections for the two-tone colours and part number alternatives for QB and QY, as shown below: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e6de591c80.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9926403503.jpg It took me a while to realise what these stripes were. At first I thought they were for factory pinstripes, but they aren't. They match the stripes featured on the two-tone model. In Australia when people get these resprayed, the painters actually mask off to achieve the pinstripe (which is pretty impressive). After some more Internet searching, I have determined that QB paint code is only listed for 1983, while QY is only listed for 1985. I first thought that perhaps the colour code changed according to year, just like the silver one did. BUT, this would mean the part numbers for the stripes are the same too which they are not. I only have one theory to offer at this point: the 1983 gold two-tone has different base and accent colours than the series 3 version. This may be right, as the colours look different from QY, an example of which is shown below: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...bddf2864a.jpeg Both the gold and the brown are noticeably lighter than those brochure pics. The gold in the 1983 brochure looks more like Maya Gold, which was a 1983 colour. I have seen two examples of a weird custom ordered two-tone in Australia which flips the gold tones: Havana Brown base with gold accents. It is a very very weird combo. No idea on the colour code and cannot confirm whether was indeed made like from the factory and the current owners were misinformed. I have all the Australian brochures for 1st gen RX-7s and the series 2 and 3 brochures do not list any of the available colours. Dealers had colour charts/swatches to show customers in the showroom. I only know the colours available from years of experience and the information the community has collected over time at ausrotary.com. |
lmao! i never would have thought to look in the stripe section, the US cars don't have it....
if you look up a badge, it shows which badge goes with what paint colors, and it in theory would list all of the paint colors. the US catalog has painted mirrors, and in theory that would list all the paint colors too, except that the mirrors didn't come on every colors, so possible the badges do this too. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...414ea1b6ce.jpg the 83 pic does look more like Maya gold, but they reuse the same pic for 84, so maybe someone got surprised? actually maybe 84 is lighter? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b63fc18ea8.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...52b5e795c8.jpg btw i'm glad this came up! my problem still is the USA, 81 and 83 are unconfirmed! |
Those are incredible brochures! Have you collected those over the years when you were working for Mazda?

Here is what I think is a QB JDM car in the wild: https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...cb6df40ba2.jpg It may be a trick of the light, but the gold looks different from P7 Antique Gold used for the QY 2 tone, which is more on the champagne side than orangey gold. More pics of Antique Gold P7 below: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8756ea5405.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...44d57d6130.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e64cd956a3.jpg PS I'm loving this discussion! |

since i'm posting pics from brochures, here are a couple from 79-80 that didn't make the cut before
from the 1979 Tokyo Motor show https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f27e05e91b.jpg March 79... Design your life with Rx7 indeed https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...97c819e63c.jpg 1980... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9396390450.jpg There is a fold out poster thing, 1980 must be a red year? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1c4acddb01.jpg and spoiler alert, the 1985 IMSA special, Kypreo has a great post linked below. V4 Canal Blue... https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ee10ed603c.jpg |
Fantastic! If you have access to all these Japanese brochures, I am very, very interested in helping catalogue information. I also have a rare Japanese Mazda genuine shop options catalogue (which I scanned and posted here, as I knew somebody else would be able to ever find this brochure): 1984/85 Savanna RX-7 JDM Options & Accessories brochure - AusRotary
I had these photos saved from an old Japanese first site which has since disappeared (and pics are not saved on the Wayback Machine). I believe this is a Canal Blue IMSA Special (but with tasteful wheel upgrade). It also has the super rare OEM front foglamp option https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...cc4ed6569e.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...84429444d9.jpg I also have plenty of photos of the Japan only V9 custom silver colour, which someone I know in Australia owned for many years. PS a curious feature of JDM RX-7s I have only just noticed after all the years (and currently building a 1:24 scale of a 1978 Savanna) is that the guard/fender badge is only on the passenger/left side and not the drivers/right side. Export models got a "Mazda RX-7" badge on both sides of the vehicle. It's a very curious styling choice. |
the car has a right and left side just like we do. so by u saying, "passenger/left side, dirvers/right side", if ur making a left turn do u turn on the right turn signal?

Hey, I just bought an 85 GSL SE 850390 from Az. and it is 95% restored and has a high $ paint scheme. It runs amazingly and has the 205/60s on original reworked rims. The interior is EC, 5spd is smooth. Good to know another 85gsler?
