1983 gsl dies after going over 4k rpm
 
Hey yall I would post this in the technical section but I dont have 20 posts so sorry administrators but i need some help here. I have a 1983 RX-7 GSL with the 12a, 5 speed with 150,000 miles. I took the a/c, hot start assist, subzero assist, AND cruise control off. I removed the cables from both hot start and cruise control and plugged the vacuum lines securely. After the day I took all that stuff off she starts bogging and hesitating very badly and dies on me every time SPECIFICALLY WHEN I drive her over 4000 rpm. When she starts bogging down and starts dying I pull the choke and she stays alive! also when she starts dying I push the gas pedal and she hesitates to rev up but dies. I had a friend push the gas pedal down for me and the throttle cable is pulling the linkage normally when she dies. Idk what do yall think this could be? she starts up and idles perfect every time also.

First two guesses would be a vacuum leak somewhere got missed (& you're leaning out) or you've got a plugged-up fuel filter or other fuel delivery problem (& you're leaning out).

Pulling the choke subtracts air from the mix, so your problem is too much air for the amount of fuel flowing.

I appreciate the help divindriver, the fuel filter i replaced a month ago, its just when I took off the cables for the cruise control and hot start assist it was a very tight space to get the cable end out and idk if i messed with the throttle linkage or somthin when i did that.

Where are you located in Georgia? If you're near Atlanta we might be able to get you some hands on help on the linkages. Or post photos, people might be able to confirm that you hooked them up correctly from the pic.

Otherwise, I'm with DD on the diagnosis, you aren't getting enough fuel at high revs. It's usually a bad filter (if you have a problem with your tank it could get plugged up in a very short time) or other fuel delivery problem (fuel pump, etc). All this can be easily tested by doing a fuel delivery test at the carb.

Ray is right. I went through 6 filters in 2500 miles before I cleaned my tank. Now smooth sailing, or accelerating.

Thanks for the input yall. Today I took off the fuel return and supply hoses on top the carb off and the fuel supply hose was flowing like a water faucet:) and I plugged the supply hose back up and the return hose started flowing as well. So I ruled out the fuel pump out. I then hooked up a smoke machine to one of the vacuum lines and then I saw her spitting out smoke at my ACV plate. I had took off the air pump and ACV and got a AVC block off plate WAY before I removed cruise control and hot start assist. It was just weird how she started acting up RIGHT after i took that stuff off. Im guessin there was more vacuum than normal and started sucking the air through the little silicone I had put on the plate. SO I put blob of black silicone on the plate and let her dry and she runs perfect now, no more dying. Thanks yall!
