1981 rx-7

Hello, I am new to the site. My 85 year old father passed away and I have his 1981 RX-7 that I do not want and would like to sell it. The color is white and the body in real decent shape. The car is a 5 speed, has about 98K miles, targa roof, front spoiler with Bosch lights on it. The interior is okay, the seats (sides) are a bit ripped from getting in and out and the mats appear to be worn. Other than that, I believe it is all original and runs great.

I do not have access to a camera or I would take pictures and post since a picture is worth 1,00 words. He has owned this car a very long time and for the most part, it was garage kept. Does anyone know the value of the car? I am thinking of selling it for $4K OBO. I live in the Cincinnati area. Realizing that I have pictures (no camera), can anyone tell me what I should ask for this car or is the $4K a good start point?

Thank you.

I think you are pretty close on a starting point. I would post a want to buy ad here on the forum in the 1st gen for sale/wanted section and add a thorough description with recently replaced parts, things the car may need, and post pictures when you are able to. Craigslist is also a great resource for selling a car so consider making an ad there as well.

Without more details and pictures its hard for us to help you determine the car's value. Was your father the original owner and does the car come with documentation to include repairs over its life and or purchase paperwork from when he bought the car? If we were closer I'd offer to come see the car and help determine a value and help you get the car posted for sale. I'd even offer a free compression test to help you out so the buyer could see how healthy the engine is. Though, being a 12A, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the engine that a tuneup and some carb adjustments couldn't fix.

Sorry for your loss.

If the rest of the car is very straight would having the seats recovered and the car detailed help the value of this?

Im just remembering the old Wheeler Dealer ( when it was practical). Also, since it seems that you have limited experience I am going to ask a few questions about the car.

What trim package? Is it a GSL with the cruise control, power windows Sunroof and for wheel disc brakes with a limited slip differential? The GSL trim package should command a higher asking price.

Does it have a glass sunroof? These are generally considered desirable. A point worth bringing up in an ad.

All that said, here is a MotorTrend buyers guide article that may help you as a seller.
