thats what we are hoping for I'm glad you guys are interested in this restore job
torrin is really excited by all of the intrest in his project helps to keep him focust

Vashner 02-20-08 07:36 PM

Father in Son project. Nothing better. Make sure you teach him safety in terms of jacking up the vehicle, using jack stands, wheel stop etc.

FirebirdSlayer666 02-20-08 07:52 PM

We love seeing projects come along. It helps give us motivation in our own projects. Keep up the good work guys :icon_tup:

crosen91 02-21-08 02:30 AM

Im glade ur behind me "resurecting" my 79' firebird, and im sure as hell gona do the best i can to do so.But as my dad said she was driven hard. I havent found much rust except surface which will come off easy enough but the interior is an entire do-over. As i said earlier, "the interior looks like its been used as a garbage dump."And thanks for all the advice and assistance i realy appreciate it. Ive learned a lot since i got on this site and i hope to keep on learning.

FirebirdSlayer666 02-21-08 02:53 AM

Just know that restoring it is going to take some time and money to do it right. For most of the interior, you should be able to get it new from Blackdragonauto.com relatively enexpensive. I'm sure you guys will rebuild the motor as well in the future. Atkinsrotary.com can take care of you there. For a nice carb rebuild/blasted/powdercoated Sterlingmetalworks.com is the place. That should definitely get you started. Of course Mazdatrix.com and Racingbeat.com should be bookmarked as well!

kymber39845 02-21-08 08:36 AM

I'm excited for you!!! Me and my Dad are also restoring a 79 SA...I'm teaching him more than he's teaching me, but it's a fun project all the same. You can see some of our progress plus pictures in the Salvage Yard Find thread. Good luck!!

axle 02-21-08 06:38 PM

we do have an extra 12a out at his grandfathers so will probably rebuild both its nice to have a spare just incase somthing happens then it's only down for the weekend while we swap it out so you can see we have put some thought behind this kymber I was reading about your find a little while ago. nice!once we have the money we already figured on contacting sterling who else would respect a restoration job like this but the carb guru himself no worry's there

crosen91 02-21-08 11:34 PM

i cant work on her right now im stuck out at my mom till Saturday but ill be back to working on her ASAPi will keep my thread updated. and am still looking for parts mainly interior, engine (exhaust), and electrical (starter switch).

FirebirdSlayer666 02-22-08 12:45 AM

I checked for you at work what an ignition lock costs. $62 roughly and it would need to be ordered. Not too bad for a new one with 2 keys

axle 02-22-08 01:12 AM

cool but it would be really nice to get the doors and ignition keyed the same we are trying to get a matched set of locks talking to tommy on the NW forum he has them don't know about shipping yet but he dosn't have keys but can get the code off of the pasenger side so a lock smith can make one for us up hear they want just over a $100 just for the ignition thank you for checking for us prices in the northwest for classic car parts can be ridiculus I guess its the clasic example of supply and demand

FirebirdSlayer666 02-22-08 01:47 AM

Exactly correct. Unfortunately most of the things for the 7 needs to be ordered if we can even get it at all. I work at AutoZone so I can check on anything you guys need

axle 02-22-08 06:28 PM

thanks firebird good to know:ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper:

crosen91 02-22-08 06:49 PM

yeah thanks to every one who has offerd their help

Cool I have been using the Zone's website to lookup parts. Once you tell it you have a car it keeps it in the cookie so the part looking is sweet.

axle 02-23-08 01:09 PM

well T is on his way home so I hope to be able to help him rehang the drivers door it needs a new hinge and finish the fix on the drivers side fender needs to be rehung compleatly so the door will quit scraping and maybe see about changing the dash out not sure about that expect up dates as its the weekend :celebrate

crosen91 02-23-08 08:38 PM

axle 03-02-08 08:41 PM

well I'd like to thank tommy for helping out with door locks and ignition we have kinda had to wait on his car as the motor in my daily driver 89 caravan turbo is leaking oil into #3 cylinder motor is toast so I'm looking for a new car or truck but also have a little extra cash so might get myself a running 7 insead of just the 2 projects my avitar is the other project car an 85 gs T is trying to get some cash together to for a parts car that is going to auction prety soon so keeping our fingers crossed

Asterisk 03-05-08 07:11 PM

TOMMKATT_SE 03-07-08 02:57 PM

Nice find. Just take your time and try to do as much as you can yourself to save $$$$. I have restored alot of cars over the years and alot of the work is not as hard as it seems. Do searches on the net and get as much info as you can on what you want to do and then decide if it's something you can do. I have gotten alot of good info right here on this site. Most of these guys really know the in's and out's of these cars. Here is a link to a gut that might be able to help you out with some parts. Good luck and can't wait to see it when your done.

crosen91 03-07-08 07:40 PM

i think my dad now has sum issues......
theres his 85 which he is taking his v8 out of and putting a rotory back in
his new 7 and parts car
mine
and my cousins which he baught earlier
making 5 and the only cars which are even being touched are the 7s now and were getting rid of the only NON-7 due to dead engien

crosen91 03-10-08 09:41 PM

got the jockey box open today found a 79' owners manual with $10.00 in it so the cars paying its self off.....lol

FirebirdSlayer666 03-10-08 09:47 PM

Nice LOL. I wish my SA payed me LOL

crosen91 03-10-08 09:58 PM

i took out the carpet from an 82 and im taking the dash too.
oh and YAY!!!!!!!!!!!....... i found the bucket seats they just need to be re-done, but for now foam, duct tape and seat covers. when i can im gona re-do the seats and interior. i should also hopefully have my ignition soon i sent tommy the green on saturday, so i SHOULD have it by next friday. then the sec i get it im gona go get a key made and c if she starts.

i all ready would know if i knew what to cross to start her the car jacker way but, i really dont want to do that.

crosen91 03-13-08 01:13 AM

i got the new dash out of the parts car today, im compleatly re-wiring the dash, the plugs out of an 82 dont match those in a 79 for some reason.... lol.
tommy got the money order today so he'll be sending out the parts here soon.....>.<YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>.<.
tomorrow is take out the old dash remove the wiring and then put the wiring in the new dash and putting it in to the car ...aka Ruby.
i also have to finish taking out the carpet for the new stuff out of my parts car, but i still need door panels and a rear view mirror for interior parts..... and yeah i also need to fix the console then, when i get the parts from tommy its put those in after i get a key made.and after she gets a freash paint job its new speakers and stereo mabye an amp. then i need to doll up the bucket seats i got so they can be used and when i get the cash have them re-done.
once i get all the insides done ill be posing pics of interior before/after.

and yeah since she decided to give me $10.00 in the owners manual she only cost me $90.00 which just makes it soooooo much better.

axle 03-13-08 06:35 PM

he is so lucky to have his dad give him the parts he needs instead of keeping them for himself but he helps me out to so it works out in the end

tommys 03-13-08 06:46 PM

I sent out the package today.......They said 2 days.......Good luck with the project, I have had 2 SAs and two FBs .......Currently have 1 SA and my S4 vert, I love the vert but there is something about a first gen that can't be beat...........

crosen91 03-16-08 12:01 AM

i got the top part of dash off and i got the carpet out i just need to put the new carpet and top part of the dash in, but im not sure she wanted new parts it took me all day to get out the dash out and when i got to the carpet i just tore it out and what wouldnt tear out i took a razor knife too the carpet was already trash anyways i didnt get the ignition im hoping monday and then im gona see if she'll start and if she does im gona be the happiest SA owner kuz then i've got a running 79' that i paid $90.00 (since it gave me the $10.00), plus the $22.00 for front speakers, my dads old CD player, the alpines out of his 85' (the black 1) for the rear, and then put on a drivers side mirror. and after that its minor body work , detailing and then a little work on fixing the console with a little JB wield. and once all the new locks are in she'll be getting a freash coat of paint

axle 03-16-08 11:19 AM

the speakers are altec lanzings from my v-8 brand new from p/o good shape but not sure if they work they have been sitting in the car for quite a while now the cd player is a pioneer super tunner 3 not top of the line now but a good little unit we know it works had it in the parts hauler

crosen91 03-17-08 08:08 PM

i got the ignition and locks today is not compleatly in the car but will b soon
shes not startin at the moment might b sum compression isssues

crosen91 03-18-08 02:03 AM

rear rotor has REALLY low comppression it wont start im probly gona have to rebuild the motor but i have a small question for any 1 who may know the answer.
will the rats nest from a 79' swap onto a motor out of an 81'? but thats only a temp im puttig the original motor back in it ASAP
and heres another 1 if i swap the 79' engine and trany temporaily will it cause any issues with the drive line?

djjjr42 03-18-08 05:55 AM

I think the solenoids are the same but you may want to search to be sure about the rats nest. Nothing wrong with the swap of the tranny and engine, but if I recall correctly you have to change the tail piece on the tranny because of the placement of the hole for the shifter on an SA.

crosen91 03-19-08 03:48 AM

i like being number 12
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-general-discussion-207/sa-fb-owners-registry-655584/page15/
any ways im just gona have to rebuild the motor the rear rotor has NO compression i think it blew a seal i just hope the housing isnt screwd that would suck ... to many hoses and wires im gona need like 8 roles of masking tape, a felt- tip marker, me tools, jack-stands, jack, sumthing to kick when i get pissed:wallbash:..... besides my car, and i still have to re-assembly my interior aaaffffffter i sand blast the rear end and hit it with some rustolium, put in my new locks, put heat shielding back on, then put the motor back in all with out getting myslef/others hurt ..... ehhh, not gona happen:rlaugh:... at least the getting hurt part

axle 03-19-08 07:24 PM

it is 5pm hear T is out sand blasting rust he found in side as I type he is also learning that walnut shells are not the greatest but its all we can get right now slow but he will get there once that is done we will use some rustolium then new insulation and paint on some bed liner after should seal her up nice anybody have any alturnative ideas

crosen91 03-24-08 05:53 PM

it starts all thanks to my girlfriend being here now it runs and i happy now

axle 03-24-08 09:00 PM

its not like it had anything to do with the third of a quart of castrol 20/50 I put into the rear rotor and let it sit for a couple days to free up the apex seals (was a last hope kinda thing and it payed off)

crosen91 03-25-08 04:26 AM

well i didnt know u did that so dont get grumpy

djjjr42 03-25-08 03:59 PM

I'm not sure if you have the insulation already or not, but I used an adhesive sound deadening material (similar to dynamat). It's easy to work with and cuts down a lot of road noise and heat.

It's Father AND Son, father in son is a church related project.

crosen91 03-29-08 12:12 AM

nice corection, but as long as he aint tossing his kid between 2 chatholic preists and having them fight to the death its not that church related

lol

crosen91 04-01-08 02:38 AM

k back on topic if any1 knows where i can get a stock 12a exhaust or one that would work for a 12a. i dont want anything loud on the contrary i want sumthing quiet that will have suficent back presure

pinoyremix 04-01-08 02:55 AM

stock..might not find one for your 79..easier just to spend a lil money for the racing beat one.. its quiet and worth the money

crosen91 04-02-08 04:35 AM

k, well since i figured i wasnt gona be able to get a stock exhaust anyways i just need to find an afordable aftermarket exhaust

Bass 04-02-08 07:06 PM

What part of the exhaust? Catback? Header?

crosen91 04-02-08 08:33 PM

from the thermal reactor to the muffler

Bass 04-02-08 09:14 PM

Check out the parts for sale section and post a WTB for a muffler etc... and see what comes up.

You may want to go with a header, at some point anyways.

Racing Beat - brand new
Disassembled Road Race Header Kit
74-85 (12A)

Part Number: 16211
Retail Price: $115.00

For ideas on exhaust and what to get, take a look through the Racing Beat web site. They got the OD and wall thickness listed in their parts descriptions. That'll give you an idea of what to look for.

crosen91 04-02-08 10:28 PM

i got the muffler
just need everything between the two

crosen91 04-04-08 04:34 PM

a stock FB exhaust will work, right?
cause if so i might have an exhaust, then all i need is a clutch hose

djjjr42 04-04-08 04:42 PM

I don't believe so, IIRC the SA has a 3rd pipe and the FB's don't. Plus I think the hangers are placed in different spots. You can check out Racing Beat's exhaust systems, even if you don't buy one from them you can at least see how they've got different part numbers for different year 1st gens, which would indicate that there are some sort of differences, otherwise they would only offer 1 part for all years.
