(OTHER) What Wideband You Guys Using?
 

I am about to start fine tuning my Sterling carb. I have been saving up for a wideband to help make the tuning process, a little bit easier, and not so much of a guessing game. I also plan to use this wideband when I do my T2 swap in my project car.

I have been searching widebands, and there is almost no information on widebands on rotarys with carbs.

I have been leaning towards the LM-1 kit with RPM converter so I can datalog. Becuase I wont always be able to have a buddy with me to look at the screen.

I had the use of a friends LM-1 for a while. I was happy with it. I may end up buying one for myself. I do want one that I can log to a laptop though if I go MegaSquirt.

LM-1, but remember you need to use a heat sink extender bung. Then im going to output the signal from the LM-1 to a XD-16 gauge, so I can visually see the a/f ratio on the fly. I got the LM-1 for a good price off a guy on ebay (brand new).

Man I know you are not referring to this 100 dollar part right here! JEez thats like a weeks pay!

Another question I have is where do I place the O2 Sensor. I am running a RB streetport exhaust set up.

Unfortunately that is the part that I am talking about. I have heard that without using it you can kill the sensor in almost no time at all.

The problem with adding a wideband with the streetport exhaust is that if you put the sensor about 2 feet down the exhaust from the engine you are only going to be reading the a/f of the one chamber. I'm not so sure about this one (no first hand experience), but its possible you may want to put the sensor where the pipes collect. But then to do that you need to purchase a longer cable from innovate.

only true if you put it close to the engine. The nice thing about a wide band is you can put it down at your muffler tip if you wanted to and it would be accurate. Just place the sensor right before the cat or presilensor and you should be fine. They have people that put the lm1 on a holder right at the muffler tip and it works fine.

I think if I put the sensor down by the muffler where it becomes one pipe, that it wont be as hot as if it was right after the header. That way I dont need the heatsink. getting extra cable is no biggie.

I have a plx 500 that i'm waiting to install (still waiting for my sterling carb)

i think im going to get the plx r500, its got all the goodies

I thought about a PLX500, way to much for me. To many features I wont use and at 500+ dollars out of my price.

My question is, how important is data logging?

Is it worth spending the extra money for this?

I am leaning pretty much going with the Innovate LM-1, just want if its worth it to get the extra stuff needed to make it datalog.

Could someone just compile a list of all available (note how I'm not saying good and bad, because those are subjective terms) widebands?

That way, people will have a good list, and after that people can give their oppinions.

Because personally, I see letters and numbers being thrown out and I don't know any of it and I'm quite interested in knowing.

I'm thinking of getting a Zeitronix and then it would fit really nicely in place of the clock on the Series 2. I'd just have to dremel the space a little wider

Well just an update

I just bought a Innovate LM-1 with the RPM kit. It should be here on tuesday, I will take it to the exhaust shop and have the bung welded in.

I got it for 330 shipped off ebay brand new. Retails at 429 so Im happy!

Sounds like exactly what I did! What exactly does the RPM kit do?

The RPM kit will allow me to hook up my coils to the wideband so that I can datalog.

It will also allow me to hook up the boost sensor, EGT, and all the other goodies to it when I go T2 next year in my project car.

I looked at the PLX M-300, I decided not to becuase I was looking for a less perment install. Plus it would cast me almost the same for the m-300, but I cant datalog with it.

I've had my LM-1 since they came out. I have ~7-8k miles on the sensor and it still works great. I keep the sensor in my exhaust at all times and it's placed right after the DP without that heat sink. I bought a replacement sensor last year "just in case" but haven't had to use it. Here is a case I made for it back before they offered one for sale.

Im pretty sure I will just run the wires, zip tie them up nicely, and just plug and unplug the unit when I need to, store it in the box for safe keeping when not in use!

I've been considering eventually getting a wideband for tuning my Sterling too... Preferably I'd like to get a guage-sylte readout that will fit in the place of the stock clock in the S3 (right between the two heater dials where I can see it in my peripheral vision!).

I aim for a permanant install because I already know that my afr changes with the seasons. Having one installed permanantly will help me keep on top of it and know when I need to re-jet.

Since I have the RB street port exhaust too, I'm going to be installing it in the same place as Matt.. where the two pipes converge at the muffler. I figure that the mixture of air and fuel doesn't change in the pipe between the engine and the muffer (why should it?) so mounting it there would be no problem. Besides, a rotary's exhaust heat is so much greater than that of a piston engine, it's probably going to have hotter exhaust gas to contend with even all the way down there!
