(ENGINE) Richard Sohn Metering Pump Adapter Install

So a while back, I picked up an OMP adapter from Richard Sohn. http://www.rotaryaviation.com/oil_in...p_adaptors.htm

You will have to contact him directly at:
Richard Sohn PCV Technologies, Inc. 8029 HWY 1087, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32433. Tel/Fax(850)834-4905 email: RES12@fairpoint.net

Now for those that don't know, this device allows you to use a separate reservoir as a source of the oil for the OMP. This allows you to use 2 stroke oil instead of dirty engine oil to inject.

For a reservoir, I chose a Yamaha Razz/Riva oil tank. ( http://motors.shop.ebay.com/_Motorcy...1QQ_trksidZm38 ) It was cheap, the size I wanted, and when mounted would look somewhat stock. In addition, it was designed to hold 2 stroke oil and thus would not be dissolved like some plastic containers. The tank also had a level sensor. Its operation allowed me to wire it in parallel to the stock oil level light. This way, if either the sump or the tank runs dry, the warning buzzer and dash oil light will illuminate.

To mount the tank, I made a bracket out of sheet aluminum. It turned out nicely and is very strong. The hose I chose is polyurethane as it is oil resistant, but still clear, allowing me to inspect the line for air bubbles.

I also ordered a OMP rebuild kit from Lowe Performance ( http://www.loweperformance.com/ ) It uses Viton o-rings, and as such will last longer than the stock rings. Correspondence with the company took a while, but in the end was worth it.

Now I am just waiting on a second OMP gasket from Mazda. They have taken two months to try to get one in :(

Nice fab work there; very clean.

Excellent mod Sgt. I was wondering about doing this sometime. Three questions.

How do the two pump pieces actually fit together? I've seen these before and assumed they bolt one on the other and one pumps from the reservoir and the other pumps up to the carb. Maybe a pict of the install would clear it all up for me.

Do the pumps utilize the existing OMP linkage to control the output of these or are they constant?

Last question where did you get the clear poly hose?

Thanks for posting this up.

In my first picture there is both a 12A and a 13B adapter. The adapter goes in between the front cover and the OMP.

The stock linkage is maintained.

I got the clear hose at a local industrial supply shop.

Nice work, please let us know how this works ourt because I am thinking about invesrting in this kit for my eventual rebuild of my own seven.

Ah, so the adapter utilizes the stock OMP!

NOW I get it... It's a blocking plate and a shaft pass-thru. It's not actually a pump, right? It just feeds the stock OMP with oil from the tank?

That'd be why you need two gaskets and the rebuild kit.

PercentSevenC 12-27-08 10:57 PM

I wanted to do that in my FB, but now I'm premixing anyway. I still might do it in my REPU.

Correct.

That looks great. Very similar to what I plan on doing to mine.

Just tried emailing him, and the email failed. Wondering if he quit.

Give him a call. He seems to change emails... he had listed unicorn@gdsys.net at one time as well

Thanks for the info. Might give it a try. How much for the 12a Sohn adapter?

trochoid 12-29-08 03:24 AM

Excellent. A few more pics and details and it's worthy of archiving.

Awesome thread.

Good to see Lowe's site is back up after all these years. I still prefer calling them though, it seems to be the best way to get them moving.

I've been wanting to do this for a while, it's still on my to-do list. Thanks for the great post. It would be cool if you could snap a pic or two of the adapter installed :)

Archived.

I have this same kit. I need to get off my ass and install it. Ive got a stainless oil can with a level tube. Its nice, but I actually think I like your tank better. Looks more stock and clean.

Nice work.

What premix are you using? I bought a case of Idemitsu from Mazdatrix.

Also, when I ordered my OMP rebuild kit from Lowes I just told them i needed another OMP gasket and they added it to the order. For like $2 or something.

I need to get another rebuild kit from them and then I am ready to go. The OMP I rebuilt I accidently sold with my old engine and the seller is taking their ever loving time getting it back to me, over a year.

Very nice install fox, I'm interested to see how it all works out (I'm sure just fine) as I was planning on doing this on my cars as well.

Edit: just looked at the site again and it looks like the 12a adapter isnt listed anymore, bummer...

That is one clean install!

I have always wondered why more people have not done this mod, I think it is the finding/placement of the 2 cycle oil bottle that scares them away.

I think jon hould archive this.
