(ENGINE) porting

Which type of ports give the most gain it power, and at what RPM's. How hard is it to port it yourself using a template? Also, how long does the engine last after you port it?

coldy13 Apr 9, 2002 12:34 PM

oops, forgot to add that its a 12a

yayarx7 Apr 9, 2002 12:42 PM

try www.mazdatrix.com. it has a good article on porting n the engine section. Also www.mazdaracing.com had a good section.

and here....http://www.badrotor.co.nz/projects3.htm

coldy13 Apr 9, 2002 01:13 PM

also, do you just need to port the intake, or is it better to do exhaust too?

82mazdarx7 Apr 9, 2002 01:30 PM

Hey I just got mine street ported by pineapple racing. Its good to port the exahast and intake ports for maximum power. Mine will put me up to about 185hp thats just the engine. nothing elese.

Good luck

coldy13 Apr 9, 2002 01:32 PM

Sweet, depending on whats wrong with my car, I may be porting it. If i have bad apex seals, then its getting ported, if not, then guess i'll keep it stock.

82mazdarx7 Apr 9, 2002 01:38 PM

It might be better to just drop a new engine in that street ported, if your apex seals are warn. just my opinon

What exactly do you mean by "just the engine." There's no way you'll even get close to 185hp if you leave everything else stock.

peejay Apr 9, 2002 06:19 PM

Yeah, my street port barely made more power than stock with the stock carb on it... I could've made more power by getting a better carb and putting it on a stock engine. However that would have cost more, unless someone has a performace carb they're willing to sell me for $90 :)

That's right, street porting was the CHEAPEST way for me to increase power... sick isn't it. :)

82mazdarx7 Apr 10, 2002 02:17 PM

No, The engine will put me up to 185 hp. Just the engine. It is stage three street ported. Lightened rotors, bigger flywheel, stage three oil mods and much more. Its made for a turbo. I got it from pineapple Racing. rob, the owner built it and he knows what he is talking about. He said it will push me up to 185 hp. Just the engine. Nothing else. I guess I will see. The engine will be finished (putting it in) tomorrow. I bet it will

peejay Apr 10, 2002 03:44 PM

The thing is, you need intake and exhaust to support the engine. Even with the stock ports the primary restriction is the exhaust, and after that it's the intake. You don't strengthen the strongest link first... The stock carb will flow enough air for 145-150hp MAX.

(I know that's exactly what I did... this is voice of experience telling you not to screw up like i did :D)

82mazdarx7 Apr 10, 2002 06:13 PM

Yea. Well thats next on my list. Intake and exhaust. I am allready 10 thousand dollars in debt. Have you seen my car. the thread is pictures of my car on the first gen forum.

OtakuRX Apr 10, 2002 08:09 PM

OK, does Pineapple Racing have a web site??

mguire Apr 10, 2002 11:28 PM

www.pineappleracing.com

yayarx7 Apr 11, 2002 05:09 AM

Rob is trickey with that URL, isn't he?:D

Felix Wankel Apr 11, 2002 05:20 AM

You had to have misunderstood him. Unless you're related to Matt1979/TheSaint007 and his 200 bhp stockport 12A.

82mazdarx7 Apr 11, 2002 12:11 PM

Well we will see wont we. It will for sure put it over 140hp that tould be fine with me. Soo I will see. I pick it up today.

peejay Apr 11, 2002 12:20 PM

Not with the stock carb and exhaust.

The engine doesn't make power - the SYSTEM makes power.

82mazdarx7 Apr 12, 2002 03:44 PM

Thats bull sh*t the engine does make power. Its not hard to figure that out. Where did you learn about rotary engs.

4ohfour Apr 12, 2002 04:01 PM

I was planning on openging the exhaust ports as much as possible and street porting the intake as I am re-building my engine anyway, I have a friend with a die grinder so I will be going it by myself :) It'll be fun... right?

:) I'm getting headers too and a high flow exhaust system, thats why I decided to open the exhaust ports, the intake ports came into mind only after I had decided on the exhaust mod.

cheers'

No, Peejay's right... the system as a whole makes power.

You could bridge-port your engine yet if you retain the stock intake and exhaust you will barely see any increase at all over a stock engine.

SilverRocket Apr 12, 2002 04:12 PM

Nope, Peejay's right:cool:

If the engine is bottled up at either end of things, you won't make any power. Your engine is fundamentally like a big air pump - you need to remove the restrictions on each side before you can expect your engine to flow any more through.

jeremy Apr 12, 2002 04:13 PM

neither the engine or the system makes power, moroons. naws makes power. :D yeah baby yeah

82mazdarx7 Apr 18, 2002 04:00 PM

I know the system makes power but for the most part, it is the engine, you just cant strap on intake and exhaust and expect the engine to haul. For the most part it is the engine
