suspension experts, need help! understeer only on right turns

suspension experts, need help! understeer only on right turns

its been a while since i made a thread, but i cant seem to figure this out. this is for my 93 fd r1. so far i've done 7 different track events, and all of the time i get bad understeer on only right turns. left turns are amazing. even with new direzza zII tires will wear out on the outside of left front. my specs are bc racing coilovers, 10k fronts and 8k rear. alignment specs are -3.0 camber fronts (just recently alligned it this way hoping it gets better) front toe factory spec, caster 6.0 degrees. both rear camber -1.6, rear toe zero. tires 245/40/17 front 255/40/17 rear. as for bushings, not sure if its been replaced but they have no play or cracks, going to replace them anyways. coilovers have not been corner balanced. could that be it? it just seems like somethings not right since it only does this on right turns. the left front upper control arm mounts do seem a little bend inwards, which i think only effects caster. anyone have ideas??

Sounds like you had a crap alignment to start with. What tracks are you running? Big Willow is hard on the left front anyway.

Fix all the crap that is bent or broken or worn. The suspension should fall under its own weight or with little effort when you unbolt the struts. Make sure the sway bars are not binding. Align it again and corner balance the car after you do all of that.

I would also consider adjustable sway bar end links and have zero load on the sway bar while steering straight with the car on all 4 wheels.
You would want adjustable end links before a corner balance anyways.

You need adjustable swap bar end links for front and rear.
Have the gas tank filled for you normal driving weight. I use 1/2 tank.
Must have your weight in the driver seat for this.
You can either sit there or put in steel weights.

Get suspension aligned and corner balanced at the same time with links not connected.
After alignment and balancing with drivers weight still in the car, reconnect end links
so there is no sway bar preload.

Also make sure you do not have bad shocks that compress too easily. During quick transitions, shocks make a lot of difference.

Good advice here.
I agree that it's a corner weighting problem.
Sounds like your cross weight is low, meaning you have too much weight on the RR and LF.

Lucky for you, I'm offering mobile suspension calibration and corner balancing services starting in March. I do free inspections if you come to me or if I'm in the area. I have one appointment in San Diego and two in San Luis Obispo so far, and an average car takes 6-8hrs to set up properly.

There's more to setup than corner balancing and alignment. Damper tuning, preload, tire pressures, ride height and rake, etc. That's without changing components...which is when it starts to get REALLY fun and you're able to build in or take out "features/qualities".

Another thing we can do is have you send me pictures of everything. Underbody, suspension components, bushings, TIRES, etc, and see if I can identify your problem(s) visually.
