There is a dude on this very forum putting a TDI 4cyl engine into an FC vert, which is about 4 steps up from this engine but same principle.

 

Lol, I find it hilarious because it's the complete opposite of a rotary. Rotor's spin, pistons bounce. Rotary blocks are light, diesel blocks are not. Rotaries die from detonation, diesels live off it. A rotary revs high and quickly, a diesel revs slowly up to like 3 - 5k.
I can only imagine how I would react if I saw one drive by and wondering how it's detonating soo badly and still running, lol

Except for the fact that they use glow plugs and possibly the correct term was more along the lines of preignition, not detonation.

They use timed injection, NOT pre-ignition, NOT de-tonation. And, glow plugs are a thing of the past.

 

Your right on all acounts, except that modern diesel engines (or all the ones I have worked on and am aware of) still have glow plugs, including unit injector and common rail designs. However except for extremley cold weather there is very little or no wait, glow plugs are only used for cold starting they also assist with after startup emmisions cleanup.

diesel's do have an equivelent pre ignition called nailing which comes from too advanced ignition or too volitile a fuel.

A good Euro diesel engine would be best, example Audi V8 4.0 TDi. That is what i'm on the search for at the moment for my new project FC, cant go anywhere till I find one and they seem hard to come by for sensible money.

About half the family cars sold in europe are now diesel, and along with 2 rx7's I also have a Peugeot 306 1.9TurboD and get upto 60mpg (UK).

 

One of the larger Merc CDI's would be my choice.

 

I was thinking the TDI out of an ALMS Audi would be cool.

Slo is that you 12mpg? For those of you that dont frequent the tdiclub.com I am working on installing a VW 1.9 td in to my vert. To make sure the project will work I am using the n/a tranny (possible upgrade to T2 later). Mazda fly wheel is machined already to fit the VW bolt pattern.

I am hoping to get 40 mpg from the little beast, a far cry better than 19.5 the rotary gets. Should be close if not better than that. I drive 54 miles to work one way so mileage is important

I think the project should be pretty sweet.

The car wont be fast but what FC with 157k miles is?

I pulled the diesel out yesterday to reinstall the rotary. I bought a tdi passat while doing the swap and only completed it to say that I did it
