Lets see pictures of your radar detector mounts!

I am planning to get a V1, but I want it to be mounted as discretely as possible, yet still effective.

I am hoping maybe right above the rearview mirror, but am not sure it wont get in the way of the overhead light controls?

What has everyone found for the best solutions.

The passport sr7 is about as discrete as you can get.

I guess I should also say "installed for under around $400." The SR7 looks nice, but is pretty crazy expensive.

Not one single picture???

Can someone at least tell me where they have mounted theirs? Do they fit and work above the rear view mirror?

I hear not to mount them there because the tinted strip at the top of the window. I mount mine close to the bottom near the dash.

While it's true tint strips can degrade reception, you still want to mount it as high as possible. Having it low on the dash may not be giving you the best performance.

Some pictures please, people. Mine is just stuck to the windshield on the rubber suction cups it came with. I'm looking for some thing installed in dash along side a Nav system and audio controls. Maybe I could hide one behind the ashtray cover plate since I don't smoke in my 7?

As the guys above said, it should be mounted as high as possible to work properly. Therefore, in the dash shouldnt work.

Some detectors have remote displays that may be mounted in the dash. However, the body of the detector still needs to be mounted high.

I was just concerned that above the rear-view mirror might not work for some reason. That seems to be confirmed by at least one person above. Other people had problems with that?

So, if above the mirror doesn't work, do most people mount it just below it?

Here's video of my V1 in action, hehe. I routed a power line through the A-pillar and roofliner.

I actually have my V1 mounted nice and high on my visor. However, it currently resides in either my '07 corolla (the tint is still above where it is mounted) or '04 stratus (no tint). I have yet to use it in my FC, since the FC is still being worked on. If I could mount it TO my rear view mirror, I would. I'm currently working on that one, though.

Nice quick video you have there except theres no point, IMHO, in hardwiring your radar detector if its still visible like you have it.

And i have a question, how did you hardwire it when the cable to the V1 looks like a phone cable, theres like 5 wires inside the cord.

I have a V1 also and i wanna hardwire it to the domelight, and mount it as far up near the domelight as possible.

Anyway, here is where my V1 sits. Not a good place as its visible by anyone. And i dont have tints on the car so im sure a cop can see it right there as i zoom pass them, going slow or fast.

I am not convinced that a high mount is really necessary. I switch my detector from car to car and in my G6 I've had it shoved in the cubbyhole down by the shifter and it still seems to work fine. Probably cuts down on it's range somewhat, and I think I get more false positives, but hey Mazdas have good brakes, I don't need to pick up a cop 20 miles away.

Well the whole point of hardwiring it is so you can conceal the actual radar. Radar detectors are illegal in some states. All i was saying is if the radar is gonna be visible anyway, should have just left it plugged into your cigg lighter. IMHO.

If a cop sees you have one, he can pull you over. And not to mention if you have a modified car, you can bet your ass he's gonna tack on some other stuff to that (modified exhaust, noise etc etc).

For those of you in states where radar detectors are legal, do you try to hide your radar detectors when you are pulled over anyway? I would guess that, even if legal, cops probably get annoyed when they see them.

I had mine wedged between the rear view and the headliner. Works great and although I have been pulled over (not for speeding), the officer never said a word about it and they are illegal here in California. Unfortunately my passport crapped out on me and now it goes off every 10 minutes or so. I think the sun got to it or something.

I'm pretty sure the officer didn't even notice it.

Hard Wired in my FD

I have mine clipped to my passenger visor since I hardly drive with any passengers. I hardwired mine to the 12v source in the dome light panel. I made a small notch in the plastic where it meets the headliner and from the outside you cannot see anything. I have no problems receiving thru the tint.
