Rotary Power Northwest (RPNW.ORG), the largest rotary vehicle club in the Northwest, is organizing a drive to the Oregon Coast with an optional overnight stay. The dates are September 29th and 30th, 2007. The route is being researched as we speak and details will follow, so for right now just mark your calendars and plan to join us for a fun drive on twisty, scenic roads! We will plan stops for lunch and dinner as well as recommend lodgings, if needed. For those who wish to sleep under the stars, I believe we will also be finding campgrounds.
Those of you that have taken drives with the club will know the kind of research we do on the route. This is not a highway cruise on 26 or 18; we find the more interesting roads. And we drive the whole route in advance to ensure it meets our standards. Areas in disrepair or active construction are avoided where possible. We will have a good idea of the places to stop for meals, rest and fuel. This takes a lot of advance planning, time on the road and fuel expended in the quest, but the results are worth it.
If you want to drive fast, we won't stop you (although we do not condone it and accept no resposibility -- use your judgement!), and if you want to just cruise, we won't abandon you. Generally, the majority of the group finds a comfortable pace with a few guys charging ahead and a few others falling behind, with everyone meeting up at the next planned stop. It all seems to work out well.
Let's get a list of participants going...

Good enough! Not everyone always shows up anyway. I just want an idea of the level of interest so we can adjust our planning.

Hopefully I'll have at least 1 fully functional FC by then ^_- [I'm still going even if I haven't fixed the high end on the base, or God forbid, failed to get the GXL driving]

Okay, done. Details on the route will come later. Bill White is planning it now and we will be testing segments for the next few weeks. Having real jobs interferes with getting it done quickly! I know I will be testing at least one big chunk of it two weekends from now, on my way to Coos Bay. Michael Edwards is also testing some of the route I believe.
BTW, all Mazdas are welcome on the drive, so if you have a Miata or Mazda6 or whatever, please come along.

I'm in Newberg but let me know where the start point is. I've been wanting to do a route like this. If someone would like to go but can't drive I have an extra seat. I thought I'd put it out there

Absolutely. All Mazdas are welcome and perhaps even other cars if they are cool enough and the drivers are not anti-rotary.
Just so everybody is clear, this event it in September, not August.
BTW, sorry for not replying sooner, but I was golfing/recreating at the Black Butte Ranch near Sisters, OR for an extended weekend. Absolute paradise.

I am working with Bill White on the route and we should have some basic details for you before I leave town on Friday. Early indications are that we will head to Newport, then up the coast to Nehalem or Cannon Beach for the overnight stay. There appears to be Camping at Nehalem Bay Park, right on the ocean, and plenty of nice/reasonable lodging for those who want a room. No idea what will happen on day two, and day one is still a bit sketchy as you can tell. Open to suggestions. We should have things firmed up pretty quickly however.
