Reman. TII smoking at start-up

Posting on behalf of my mechanic...

A quick search of the Forum has brought up plenty of coolant leak comments, but nothing that quite fits this sitch:

My mechanic just finished an engine swap on TII. But it's blowing a cloud of white smoke on start-up. This FC sits inside the shop (i.e. sits and starts in a warm place) so it's not steam/condensation (his nose has already told him that.
When he first did the change out, one of the turbos was bad. It's been replaced, but the smoke continues. Since this engine is a 'new' rebuid, he's having a lot of difficulty accepting that she's smoking because of an internal seal failure (and neither he nor the owner is looking forward to the headache of shipping the motor back.)

Any suggestions on 'not typical' causes of white smoke? Where else could he look/what else could he check?

How long does the smoke last? If the smoke is during start up, only, then it must be running rich.

I had the same problem too with a rebuild replacement. I would start it up, then after a few seconds the smoke would disappear.

It is common for a rebuild to smoke heavily at first. It is all of the oil and grease they use on the inside. Basically my understanding is they just about bathe the inside with oil so that it doesn't give you problems on startup. My Atkins smoked heavily the first time I started it, and thereafter for about one day.

Just an idea. You said the turbo is bad. Was it bad because it had an oil seal go south? My idea is that it may have sprayed oil through the compressor and then into the intercooler. Maybe the oil is now getting sucked/blown past the intercooler and into the engine for burning. You can take the IC off and run kerosen and then simple green through it with a ton of water to clean it out.

Yeah, I think they put vasoline in the Atkins engines. At least that is what it looks like on my TII

put some miles on it, should go away. Takes awhile to burn all the goo out of the motor.
