Teach me about the Holset HX40W

My friend grabed one of these turbo's fairly cheap used and passed it along to me. I think I would be absolutly insane to strap it onto my monster street ported 13b in my TII because I do not have a stand alone, or fuel system to support such a large turbo.
What I know about it.
Holset HX40W
It has a external wastegate.
4" inlet, 4" outlet.

However I can not find anything about this turbo? What can I compair it to when it comes to other turbo's? Is is larger then a T80? or what? Thanks guys!

After a little research, I have found is the eqiv of a T-61 mabey a T-66. So its smaller then I thought. Just a strange question...... could I run really low psi on this turbo and run it safely?

My stock turbo is dying and just wont cut it anymore.
I have a FD fuel pump, GSL SE injectors, and soon a SAFCII. I know I should be looking into a stand alone, walbro, huge FMIC, and 1600's.... but I cant afford it.

If you cant afford standalone, how are you going to afford to replace your blown engine?

Now, I may be wrong....but I was under the impression the HX35 was between a T-66 and a T-78...I would guess the HX40 would be bigger than my 35...but I could be wrong. My 35 has a 4" in, and a 3" out just to compare. CJ

You know, mabey my info is wrong, I am getting the turbo tommorow to inspect and decide if I want it or not. What exhaust manifold are you using? I would love to run this turbo even it was at 8-10psi max.

Either that or I should get another stock turbo and just port the inlet/exhaust.... Im not looking for how much hp I can get, I just want a fun semi fast car with what I have avalible.

If you don't have the funds to do the install correctly, just go with a replacement stock turbo. It will save you a LOT more money in the long run. Just wait until you can get a standalone and fuel to support before you go putting on a large turbo, remember, even at 8-10psi on a hx40 you're flowing WAY more than a stock turbo...

I also found that the hx40 has a comp. inducer of 58mm and the hx35 has 55mm. couldn't find any other measurements as of yet...

The HX40 is a common upgrade for the Cummins Turbo Diesel. No idea on the maps but the HY35 (same compressor as the HX35 with a smaller hotside) on my Cummins "looks" very smallish compared to a decent sized T4 you'd find on a rotary. The one negative rub against the HX40 from the Cummins crowd it that the compressor shaft is easily snapped when stalling the turbo. If you use it make sure you have a BOV that's working properly to protect your investment.

I got the turbo today and found a rebuild tag on it. It even has the paint on the compressor wheel. It has very very little shaft play im sure would disapper once oil pressure was applied. Im not quite sure what to do with it .

The fuel system upgrades, fmic, stand alone, and 4" exhaust are taunting me.

I am using that turbo, done many kilometres with no prob at all and my car produced 498 rwhp at 0.7 bar..the turbochanger gives the impression that is sleeping at the boost...later this month I am going to 1.2 or 1.5 bar of boost..

I'll keep you informed

I have a HX40R in my stage 1 streetport kit. Compressor inducer is 60mm and 4" divided inlet. Exhaust has 23 exhaust housing and 4 bolt entering a 3" outlet. The spec says it's good for 650 hp on a piston engine and i have dynoed 380 rwhp@7100 rpm with boost 12.8 psi. This is on a RotoTest hub dyno. There is not much power below 4000 rpm but at 4500 is "flies"

498 rwhp at 10 psi? Are you running a 20b?

i don't know what it is about the holset turbos but for such small wheel sizes they really do produce good power. we use them on a lot of our piston engine setups.

Goodfella no, I am using a 13B-REW engine and the porting is huge.

When I bought the turbo the original wastegate had a label for up to 3.8 bar...!!!
This is why the turbo at that pressure gives the impression that it's sleeping..

Also, 2 hours ago I got an e-mail from the technical team of the Holset turbos and they told me that I would be able to use the turbocharger efficiently and adjust the boost level to 1.5 bar...
I am looking forward to it...

I'm not trying to rain on your parade or be a jerkoff, but check out this link, post #207:

https://www.rx7club.com/time-slips-dyno-121/dyno-graphs-229717/page11/

475 rwhp at 10 psi.....on a three rotor. Huge porting won't overcome a 50% displacement increase

Goodfella that guy produced that number with a T-70..the holset turbo is much bigger...I am not claimming that I have the best car in the rotary community..I posted my opinion according to my dyno and the feeling I'm getting from my holset turbo.

Also, I'll try to find the dyno and post it here.

Can you measure the wheels for us? If I remember correctly, all the compressor and turbine wheels that I could find for the hx40 were smaller than the T70. I have a couple buddies that have run holset's with excellent results, but no numbers.

Aaron,

The compressor wheel is 84.5mm and the turbine wheel is 64mm in twin flow turbine housings.

I assume that is compressor exducer diameter, correct?

Yeah, I noticed that it was a T-70, which is small for a 20B. I didn't think the turbo you're running was that huge.......when does it see full boost? Also, are you talking comp wheel inducer (minor) or exducer (major)?

A greddy T-78 is a proven performer on the 13B, and has a comp wheel inducer of around 67mm. It has made around 500 rwhp at 20 psi many times over the years......you're saying that you made the same power at half the boost with your turbo?

aaron my mistake yes..the inducer is 65 and the exducer 84.5...

goodfella my mate is using a T-78 in his FD and even though my turbo looks "smaller", it produces very good power and sees full boost between 2.5K and 3K...while my mate's FD has full power around 4.5K..

Next time I'll have my camera with me in order to take a photo of the Holset turbo.

Also I have a couple of videos..2nd to 3rd gear opening etc..have to copy them from the other pc and you can tell me what you think,ok?

Hi

Hope this helps

Turbocalculator with Holset compressormaps;
http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/

HX35 has 60/69mm turbinewheel and HX40 64/76mm turbinewheel.

Data from Holset dealer:

HX30
Compressor: 68mm or 72mm.
Turbine: 8 - 10 cm2

HX35
Compressor: 77mm or 82mm.
Turbine: 12 - 18 cm2

HX40
Compressor: 82mm or 85mm.
Turbine: 20+ cm2

inducer size
68mm = 38->46mm
72mm = 42->54mm
78mm = 46->56mm
82mm = 46->60mm
85mm = 50->60mm

All of the above go in 2mm increments.
