newbie lookin to buy an rx7

Hello everyone,

I'm looking into gettin an rx-7 I've always wanted one, so today I found one at a dealership, and i was wondering if i could get some advise about anything i should look into specifically for trouble spots. As I took notice while checking out the car it looks like it had some aftermarket ad ons. I notice it def had a new intercooler, racing beat exhaust, lowered about an inch and a half or so. Also the car is a '93 had about 74k miles and red w/ leather exactly what i want it's so gorgeous; when i started it up and reved the engine it sounded like the engine almost died when the revs came down to settle at idle, i'm thinking it's because of the backpressure maybe from the exhaust. Can you give me some advice to what i should look for when buying one, such as things that usually go wrong or turbo problems and such. Your help would be very appreciated thank you very much.

god i hate red leather interior, but that's just me. what ever you do, make sure to drive it hard thru all the gears but to warm it up first, make sure you go to redline in 3rd and possibly 4th and check the boost and vaccum. Make sure to have fun

good luck

I love the '93 red interior. The '94 red interior on the other hand, I would pass on. What is the exterior color? I have an SSM on red and can see why you love it so much. To anyone who hasn't seen the combo in person, don't be so quick to judge it. Anyway, if you cold started it and revved, it's not unexpected for the RPMs to settle. Once you get it warmed up, it shouldn't do that though unless you have too large of an electrical load or bad grounds. Sounds like you found a nice FD though, with some pretty tasteful modifications.

You may want to invest in a check up at a shop that specializes in these cars. Money well spent. You don't want to buy a car with expensive problems.

Good point... I have a good relationship with my mechanic, who has specialized in rotaries for 14 years. That helps things.
