Last weekend I ran into a kid with an Immaculate 1991 Nissan 300zx Twin turbo. Surprisingly, he started admiring my car and I let him look under the hood (the contents of which astounded him) but then he checked out my cooling fan and said it would free up a whole lot of stress from the engine and help RPM under acceleration if I ran the fan electrically instead of off the belt. Is this accurate? I never here any of you guys talk about modifying this, but I wondered if since he drives cars with crankshafts and more parts relying on that belt that freeing up something like the fan would help his engine. I as you all know have an eccentric shaft among other things, can I benefit from this modification? I know Z's are kind of the RX-7 rival, but damn his was nice. Absolutely original with 51000 miles and black on black with projector headlights. By the way, he told me he almost bought an FD before he found the Z, but other Z owners told him to stay away from RX-7's due to engine fires. Poor mislead soul.

goin to an electric fan will gain almost nothing, maybe free up 1/4 hp. the stock clutch fan barely causes any power loss, and pulls plenty of air. I personally am goin to run an electric fan on a switch, but only to clean up the engine compartment and so i can have the fan running w/ the engine off.

Nothing flows as much as the stock mechanical fan,but many people run electric for a little bit of HP gain and to save some space.Not to mention belt longevity.Basically,its an easy mod thats not really gonna gain you much.If you dont install a thermally controlled fan,you have to remember to turn the fan on in traffic,or its bye-bye engine.
And the guy's friends arent entirely wrong about engine fires and RX-7's.....it fairly common on S4 2nd gens and the extrmemly hot running FD's.

damn strait he should be staring at the 7.
the 7 cant lose.
I went electric, and have been very happy with the results. The car has a bit more pep or responsiveness in the low gears. It also gets rid of the tendency for your car to sound like a jet engine getting ready for takeoff.
Don't run it on a switch. Nobody is perfect, and it only takes one time (forgetting to turn it on) and you lose your engine. I bought a controller from Autozone for under 20 bucks and it has worked great.
Is it a vital mod? Nope. Will it magically produce more horsepower? Sorry. The only noticeable gains are the peppiness (picture this as installing a lightweight flywheel, only not nearly as much difference), and a cleaner roomier engine bay.

i would like to see a few dino runs one w/ the stock fan and one w/ the e-fan. if you swap to the e-you are going to see gains. if you cant feel it w/ your ass, then prove it to your self by doing some timing 1/8 ml, 1/4m, 60-100, or better yet a top speed run this is how i checked mine out. w/ stock fan i could do about 110 w/ the e-fan i went a much easier 125...

I have been mulling this over myself, I mean unless there are serious heat issues with an undersized fan or major electrical draws I cant see this NOT helping. Less rotational mass is less rotational mass, amirite?
well i would imagin since we have much smaller moters then the Z'z going electric would help us a lot more then it would help them still prolly not 2 much HP gain but im gunna do it..... rx7's arnt all that torquy eather so it might help there some
