Ray, it's been a while for sure. I've had this FC for three years now, and I'm finally swapping in a turbo engine. I'd like to find a stock downpipe (for fitment and cheapness) , as it is one of the final pieces I need. Also still need a flywheel brake and a new set of injector grommets. I'm waiting to start the swap process until I am reasonably sure Ill have everything I need.

Colin here's an aftermarket RB downpipe on Craigs list I stumbled on:

https://greenville.craigslist.org/pts/5592127384.html

"Racing Beat Down Pipe for 2nd Gen (1986-1991) RX-7 NA coupes (only - NOT convertible). USED. Fits manual or automatic transmission cars. RB PN S16206 but before nickel plating. Pipe is 2.5" outside diameter with 1/8" wall thickness. In original RB bag with PN sticker and stored in garage. Bolts to the stock exhaust manifold. Eliminates the catalytic converter sections but requires a pre-silencer or a cat. to connect to the stock 'Y pipe' section. Must supply your own gaskets. You will never burn this pipe out! This pipe provides quicker throttle response and a horsepower and torque increase by eliminating exhaust flow restriction. See photo and current price on RB site as well as matching pre-silencers. I have moved to Missouri."

If you ever end up in Atlanta, pop in. If you make any plans, we'll try to work the Lakehouse around it.

well my mission to get this motor loose didnt go as planned this weekend. First tried a can on mazda carbon cleaner that my dad grabbed at a mazda dealership he was working at and no go, then did the atf treatment and still not a millimeter and it got me thinking.

The only time i tried to crank it the starter just clicked and made a pretty nasty noise and im starting to wonder if the starter is completely locked up and preventing the flywheel from moving as i can make it move at all in either direction what so ever (with a large breaker bar and far amount of oomph at that) anyone else ever ran into or heard of this? im gonna pull the starter this weekend to see if thats the case

Ugh, something like that happened to me once... Went to start the car one day and it got a revolution or two into it and locked solid.

For the record, I do not believe the starter is your problem. The little gear that contacts the teeth on the outside of your flywheel rides on a shaft, this part is called the bendix. When you apply the appropriate power to the starter unit, this gear gets 'thrown' out from the nose of the starter and makes contact with the flywheel. Once the key has been rotated back from the starting position, the gear retracts away and no further contact is made.

I would sincerely doubt that the starter has locked in an extended position and is causing your motor to be locked up. If this were true, then a good lean on a cheater bar or pushing the car in gear would eventually and quite easily over power the tiny starter motor and you'd have turnage happening.

I suspected an apex seal that was damaged and came out of the rotor, jamming the engine. I did eventually break it free, but the damage was long since done and it did not run properly. The world may never know...

very well may end up being an apex seal and if getting rid of the starter doesn't help im gonna pull the engine. my biggest reason for wondering if it was that or something else is I just cant imagine any carbon or apex seal holding that tight as like I said im using a very large and heavy breaker bar and putting damn near all of my strength behind it and I cant get it to move one millimeter. figured I would have broken anything holding it at this point

Kinda new to the group and haven't made a meet yet but.. It's quite amazing how much stopping power a loose apex seal can render when lodged and stuck against the rotor in the right place. When you put that much torque on a cheater bar and not a budge.. Ugh..

You could be right.. I don't wrench cars anymore but I've been a machinist, tool and die maker, designer and builder of many machines, saws, routers, drilling machines etc., rare that a bearing would withstand the torque of a wrench and cheater bar but it is entirely possible. Have you tried rotating in the opposite direction?

Thanks for the heads up on the white SE Paul, that is a pretty one.

I do have issues with it however:

1) It's a respray that negates the iconic black side trim and mirrors that make a 1st gen a 1st gen.

2) It's an SE and probably has fuel injectors, no Nikki, no good.

3) Those are nice wheels, but they are rewinds, not panasports. I gotta have the real thing.

The White One III, my 83 GSL project, will be in another class altogether.

Chris, I'm with Michael on the seized bearing, those rotor bearings are big and when they fuse, nothing is going to budge them.

Martin, I was very very tempted by your 12A, very hard to resist.

But I've been seeing a therapist about this kind of thing lately and taking my meds on schedule, so after a couple hours I calmed down and came to my senses.

However I would consider a trade for a nice pair of maroon velour seats and a decent center console, as long as my wife doesn't find out.

it is a bone stock motor, I bought it in a lot of rx7 parts so the real condition is unknown. is swooshes when you turn it by hand and all the apex seals are in place

I'll admit the Nikki is a decent carb (had one) but "no good" to fuel injection isn't really fair unless you're seeking non-stock HP. In my case, stock is preferable, long lasting desirable, sturdy, well designed and issue free always a plus. 116k and counting, of unfettered reliable service and touting around 160hp ain't bad either. Especially when the last time anybody tweaked the timing or fuel injectors was .. Hmmm 31 years ago in Japan. I could be headed for 250k + miles of driving time while most are still trying to figure out what jets to use. I'd say Nikki good... Stock EGI better!! JMO..

You are talking my language Paul up to that part about the stock EGI stuff, we will need to discuss the rest over a couple of beers.

Soon I hope, when are you getting your Southern Butt and your pretty black SE up to an OGTA meeting anyway?

I got an issue with the town of Dillard and the way they do their traffic citations. Anybody mind if I post it here?

I have a nephew in Marietta so I have a place to stay but it's either got to be a weekend or during our plant shut down weeks. July and Christmas. Possibly I can utilize a PTO day for one of those third Tuesday evenings. OR how bout you guys meet me half way(?) lol..

Well think of it this way Paul.

We are four and a half hours north of Savannah, but we are 14 and a half degrees cooler.

So how is a Yankee like you doing in that Savannah heat?

I used to live in New Orleans, which I imagine is a lot like Savannah in the summer.

You need to drink lots of daiquiris all day long to stay cool and hydrated.

We had drive-up daiquiri stands in NO which I, being a Yankee myself, thought was a pretty cool idea. Not sure about Savannah.

Do make it up to an OGTA meeting sometime.

I look forward to discussing Nikki's vs EFI, Clinton vs Trump, that kind of stuff with you, I'm sure we can come up with a consensus.

I'll buy.

But don't wait too long, us OGTA's are dying off fast.

New job is demanding. My legs are killing me. Save "hydrating" for weekends these days. Heat is definitely a challenge and we haven't even begun.. No politics for me.. I got thrown off too many front porches talking my opinion..one way or another ill make a meeting. Just don't know when. Allowed to walk downtown open container as long as in a plastic cup.. That's pretty cool.

I would imagine you wouldn't be all that impressed today at the 34 year ago technology. From all the apparent over and under steer demonstrated I'd say you had to work a lot harder as he is in the vid. Couldn't go to RB back then and buy adjustable coil overs. Had to use old school smarts to keep it sticky.. Tire compounds have come a long way too!!
