tracking with upgraded SMIC

has anyone tried tracking an FD with an upgraded SMIC?

i've been running my stock IC with my single turbo setup and finally did some street tuning. in 3rd gear alone the IATs went from 95*F to 150*F, which is insane. much, much worse than i thought it would be.

so i'm wanting to upgrade my intercooler without going all out and doing a VMIC or enormous SMIC that would require relocating the battery. i can make it custom and make some decent ducting, but i'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this on a track. is it going to be a waste of time?

has anyone really used an upgraded SMIC? i'm thinking something similar to an M2 medium, so i don't have to relocate my battery.

I've run with a PFS SMIC on track for years. I also supplement with 350 cc/min straight water injection. My temps are higher than I'd like at the end of a 20-30 min session at upwards of 50-70C depending on ambient, but not an immediate failure either. Sure as crap better than 150-wow. I'm checking temp with PFC reading from a fast reacting sensor.

Sorry, I was totally asleep at the wheel and was thinking in C instead of F. You're correct though that seeing that with a 3rd gear pull is pretty excessive as mine only got that high after 20 hard minutes on track in June. Generally in the spring or fall they'll stay in the 50-ish C range. Highway pulls will go up a few degrees C but then immediately back down.

You could band aid the situation by hooking up a pump and reservoir with ice water in it. I don't know the stock fd smic very well, but shrouding also helps

do you have the stock Duct . Honestly the stock IC is not very good . specially for track .

I made a pettit coolcharge 3 replica , with their duct , and an E fan connected to it , and its worked quite well .. No where near as good as a V mount . but Im cheap .

I also keep my boost down . Specially on the track . When miatas are running around faster then I am , I figured I need more skill and seat time VS powarrr!!

( I also run the stock twins ) After a 20 minute session my intake air temps are around 70C ,

With the stock mount I saw intake air temps of 90C without even taking it to the track .

some water / meth injection helps , But you need a big tank because 20 minute sessions seem to drain meth systems quite quickly .

I ran my first 3 day event this past weekend. It was cooler, but on Sunday it was 55 and sunny and I ran all day with 20 and 25 min sessions. IATs peaked at 41C on the PFC. Stock twins at 12-13psi, PFS SMIC, 350cc/min water injection. I also run a shielded intake that pulls air from next to the radiator which helps.

I autox my fd with the pettit II intercooler and I get intake temps of 50c on the high side, no battery relocation, and it drops the water temp a couple degrees also.
