Lap timer and mount recommendations for lapping and time attack

Or smartphone apps if they are good. I don't have a decent smartphone yet, but if iOS or Android works well, I'll consider upgrading.

I use an AIM Solo. You need something with predictive lap timing so it can help you while you are in the car.

Thanks! I'll look into the AIM.

Kind of funny that their website is still promising solo autocross functions for "September-October, 2011"

Awesome. I'll see if any of the local speed shops has one to look at.

It comes with a mount that you can bolt or tape in the car. A windshield mount is extra.

Works for me. I'm not competing, so as long it can be safely secured, dash mount is fine.

Perfect. That's where I'd put mine.

I also use AIM Solo in my race car. Pretty frickin awesome product for $400. Nice big screen, well laid out information on the screen, stupidly simple to use.

Never tried the smart phone apps though.

Smart phone apps work ok, but you can't see the screen to get any real time data. And they can heat up and shut off when it is hot outside and sitting in the window mount.

I use an AIM Solo as well, and use the RAM suction cup mount on the windshield with good success. AIM has good support and if you're doing time-attack you'll definitely want the in-car feedback you get with the solo.

Good idea. I'll look at the windshield mount as a possibility – mounting under the climate controls on my dash would block the turbo timer and boost controller under the radio... not a huge deal, since I don't fiddle with them on track, but I'll try whatever works best for my line of sight.
