So, small update. Unfortunately ran into a delay... I shipped out the housings to Freelance on Feb. 1st to get CNC'd, they got there on Feb. 11th after the second delivery attempt, then on Feb. 18th I got an email with an update, they got 2 feet of snow the previous weekend and the roof to the shop collapsed so now they have to take some time to fix it and re-calibrate the tools since everything inside the shop got mega cold. Hopefully they will be shipped back to me this week.

I'm probably going to try to get the porting of the irons nailed out this week, then head over to a local company called Superfinishers to get the irons lapped flat. I haven't done much else of anything, just haven't had the motivation to work on it really.

I got bored and put all of my Time Attack Podium stickers and Season Award stickers on the car. Most of these were won while I was driving the Miata, but I put them on my car because my Dad has his on the Miata since it's his car.

In one of those Facebook buy/sell groups this popped up, a Speedsource metal shifter bushing. Nabbed it for 10 bucks. Unfortunately after some research I found out they don't work with the AFE Short Shifter because the lower ball of the shift lever sits too low and comes into contact with the bottom lip of the metal bushing. I'm going to take some measurements and see if I can't take some material off of that lip and make it work.

I also picked up the SOHN support kit from Epitroch, this will save me the hassle of trying to figure out a solution for the external tank for 2-stroke oil that will feed the SOHN. Nice kit, definitely recommend it to anyone with a SOHN adapter on an RX-8.

Alright, so we are actually all caught up to present day.

Basically what happened was that the housings I had sent out for machining came back, and the machining had revealed flaws in the housings that I didn't spot before I sent them out. I'm not comfortable using them for the rebuild, so now I'm out 400 bucks.

It's either pony up $1200 for brand new housings from Mazdaspeed motorsports, shelve the project, or figure out something else.

I ran some numbers and...

New Plan: 13b-REW Swap

First Step: Part out all Renesis engine parts and Renesis specific aftermarket parts I have stockpiled and start doing research.

This is what I am in the process of doing right now.

If you have read the thread up to this point, I would like to say thank you and hope you enjoy what is about to happen next.

In other news...

I'm extremely excited to announce that TurboSource has come onboard as a sponsor!!!

They will be supplying my build with an Adaptronic standalone ECU! This will take some strain off my budget as well as give me peace of mind on picking an ECU. I'm very excited to try the Adaptronic unit as they seem to have excellent support and are working hard advancing the capabilities of these units.

One other issue I was working out was how to retain power steering. It seemed that the stock PCM was going to have to stay connected to the electronic power steering module because without seeing vehicle speed and engine speed via CAN connection, the power steering will not work. But then I was made aware of these guys: RX8 Steering Controller - CANbusAuto - Home of Automotive CANbus Innovation

It seems with one of their units I can completely ditch the stock PCM/ECU and run the car with just an Adaptronic unit. One other exciting thing is that they seem to be working on a power steering controller that can be adjusted from inside the car. Cockpit adjustable power steering assist force would be WICKED.

So I went through and looked at some classing, here are my power and weight goals for NASA Time Trials. Also I will be classed in Unlimited class of the UMS Tuning Time Attack and in Limited RWD in Global Time Attack.

NASA Big Bore Classing (I will fit into TT1, the fastest class before you get booted to Unlimited.)

-0.1 (Weight Bracket)
+0.3 (Rotary Engine, 2 rotors or less, 1 turbo or less.)
-0.7 (Non-DOT Tire Compound)
+0.3 (Non-DOT Tire Size between 244-267mm)

Minimum Weight: 2750 with driver
Maximum RWHP: 482

To play it safe so I don't go over power or under weight, I'll run at about 465RWHP and have it so the car weighs 2750lbs with absolutely no gas in it.

If I decide to put in a faceplated (dog engagement) T56 later, that has a mod factor of -0.2 and maximum RWHP would have to come down to 466 and I would probably run at about 450RWHP with that.

The other thing that I will be able to set up nicely is having the turbo at a higher boost in the low RPM's to try to flatten out my HP curve at that max HP so that I can have more power under the curve, this is definitely one advantage of having a turbo motor in a HP limited classing system.

Yeah I'm pretty pumped to get this car back out there. I'll have a passenger seat installed so if you're ever at another NASA event you'll be able to ride along on track if you'd like.

In other news, turbo, turbine housing, UIM, ECU, swap mount, and a couple odds and ends will be here soon.

I've also set up a plan of attack for the engine build, just need to go and throw down some cash to get it started. A local guy here will be building it. (Cesar)
I decided to go with a large street port.

Engine build is underway! Also I am going to be using a dry sump system so I don't have to worry about oil starvation. Would rather spend the money and protect my investment in the engine.

Stuff I have so far or is in transit to my house:
Turbo
Turbine Housing
ECU
Injectors
Ported, Polished, Epoxied, Extrude Honed, Gasket Matched, Welded and Milled upper intake manifold. (Gangster.)
RX8Performance Swap Mount Kit
Misc. other stuff. Still a lot of parts to go.

Turbo and the Adaptronic E440 ECU arrived a bit ago! My tuner, Tony at UMS, has been poking around the WARI software and is pretty excited to try out the Adaptronic. I'll be utilizing flex fuel as well as using the stock RX-8 ABS sensors to take advantage of the traction control function as well. Also the actual ECU is TINY, I couldn't believe how small it was. Like the size of an original GameBoy. Mounting this thing will be a breeze inside the car, I will probably have it flush on the switch panel so I can see all the Ignition, Fuel and other status lights for quick and easy troubleshooting.

Again thank you to Elliot at TurboSource.com for providing me with this awesome engine management solution, can't wait to get down to business.

Ooooh pretty.

So, updates.

Got an exciting picture from my engine builder today. Just a few more things to be done and then I can pick it up tomorrow.

The shop I am working with is making progress on a pretty trick dry sump setup that I will be running.

I am also happy to announce that I will be working with an awesome local company:

Full Function Engineering (Full Function Engineering | FFE Store)

The products of theirs that I will be incorporating in the build are:
Primary Fuel Rail
Secondary 4 Injector Fuel Rail
FD Hall Effect Trigger Kit
FD Oil Filter Pedestal
FFE Pressure Transducers for Fuel/Oil pressure to be fed into the Adaptronic ECU.

And yet another awesome local company that is lending me a hand:

Injector Dynamics (Injector Dynamics - The standard for tuners and car builders worldwide.)

I'm using six of their ID 1000 injectors, utilizing flex fuel adjustments and the three stage injection that the Adaptronic ECU offers.

Anyways, I haven't done a whole lot to the car lately besides finalize plans for electrical and fueling systems and acquire more parts, I've been settling into a new job, but now that the motor is done it's time to get cracking... still lots of things to be done.

Alright, picked up some stuff from some local companies that are helping out with my build tremendously and also got some necessary parts from Mazdaspeed Motorsports so I can put the engine in and start mocking stuff up. Hoping to get the engine dressed up and ready for initial install tomorrow.

Snail Performance was nice enough to bring this back for me from California while they were at an event there. Will give me more room for large oil coolers and the v-mount.

Full Function Engineering goodies, two Bosch 044's, and Xcessive LIM.

The Xcessive LIM is going to take some work... for a $500+ dollar piece it looked like a 5 year old cleaned everything up with a dremel... also if anyone gets one of these, be sure to clean it out good. There's a ton of metal shavings in it...

On the other hand, all the Full Function parts are immaculate and are well thought out and high quality. Can't wait to try it out.

Some brand new Injector Dynamics ID1300's fresh off the flow bench. Decided to be safe and get a little bit bigger injectors. The ID1300 is also their best injector for alternative fuels, as it has all stainless steel internals and was made with alternative fuels in mind.

Some miscellaneous hardware that I'll need to put stuff on the motor. Also a stock oil pan for now, so that I can put the engine in and mock it up. I will be able to put the dry sump in later, I'll be able to change it with the engine still in the car anyways.

Rotary Works 90mm TB. Did a lot of reading and decided to get it anyways since I don't have a throttle body. I'm going to take it apart and seal it a bit better.

good to see you over here, man. i remember your thread on Rx8Club and i definitely dig your car and the evolution that you both have been going through over time. big step to make the REW plunge, but honestly, probably the best given what you do with the car.

Thanks man. Yeah it's pretty crazy for even me to read through this thread, if someone told me two years ago that this is what I would be doing with the car I would have called them a liar haha.

I thought long and hard about what to do for the engine, the MSP just does not have the power potential that I need to be competitive at the larger time attack events. The options I was debating were N/A 20b, 13b-REW single turbo, or F20c turbo, and the REW made the most sense to me and was the easiest for me to do.

Going to be an awesome build. I own FC, FD, FE and I think the RX-8 chassis has the highest "potential" for time attack.

EFR9180 is the right turbo for sure!

When I get my EFR 7670 running in my FC I would like to transfer it over to the 8.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Should be making some good progress this weekend.

This is a page that some of my track buddies and I have, any likes would be highly appreciated and will help me with the build if I can increase exposure to the project.

Thank you for your time.

Any updates?
Why did you go with the 9180 with a power goal of 465?
Who built the motor?

Sorry for the wall of text but it's the shortest response I could work out to fully explain my reasoning haha.

Been working on posting more, been busy but will post some updates soon.

The top power goal isn't 465, that is just a power goal for a very specific car setup for a specific NASA time trial class. In TT1 with a minimum weight of 2800 with driver, and if I have non-DOT tires and a dog engagement transmission, my maximum power is 475WHP, so I would aim for 465.

I'll likely be running DOT approved tires like a Hoosier R7 or Nitto Nt01 at first, and with just that one change my maximum power moves to 539WHP.

I would like to be able to run it at about 500HP with the ability to use the scramble boost function in the Adaptronic for say the main straight at 650WHP, but only if I absolutely need to and only at Global Time Attack events. We will see how that works out though... I've always driven low HP non-turbo momentum cars so it will take a lot of getting used to. Needless to say I'll be starting out at wastegate spring pressure and working up from there.

Now even with that being said, even at 465WHP it would still be advantageous to run the 9180, not only because it is easier on the motor, but because the class is only limited by peak HP and not torque. Meaning I can use the boost by RPM function in the Adaptronic to make it produce 465HP from say, 5000RPM all the way to 8000RPM. Making 465HP at 5000RPM requires 490WTQ, which is tough and requires a big turbo, then you reduce boost as RPM rises to keep the power level under your limit and your power under the curve within the powerband is a massive advantage compared to anyone else that doesn't have that ability. If that makes sense.

And finally my engine was built here locally by Cesar (Javi's Rotary Shop). He also does work with Gato Performance and guys in PR.

Nice build, as you already know the RX8 chassis makes a great race car. Time Attack is a great format. Went to a World Time Attack Challenge in Australia 3 weeks ago, great competition with Japanese teams competing there including the ex RE Amemiya 20b RX7 and a bonus with Mazda's 767B Lemans car doing demo laps (loud lol) Trying to gain those seconds and tenths becomes very addictive.
Good luck
