How-to for PFC install

Guys, I've been reading up on installing the PFC for several days making use of all of the resources I can find, and I'm still not completely confident. From what I can tell, the only thing people seem to agree on is that you need to clip some wires on the ECU harness. I guess what I'd like to know is, once the wires are clipped (that does seem pretty straightforward), what next?

For those that have done this, please offer your input and I'll consolidate it all into one thread or doc and we can post it up for everyone to use. So, I'll start it out:

1. Disconnect negative battery cable

2. Remove factory ecu.

3. Clip wires (details to be added since this is already well known).

4. Plug PFC in

5. Reconnect negative battery cable

6. ??

...What about letting the car idle? What about making changes to maps?

I guess the other thing I'm curious about is whether I need to do anything to those maps right away? The only flow mods I've got is my DP. I'm stock with everything else so far, but plan to go CB and intake sometime this year. Is the map that's in there from the start ok for me (I mean, when I turn the car on for the first time after installing the PFC)?

Let's get this documented really well so that others will benefit from our collective experience BTW, I'd like to try for installing my PFC this coming Saturday (5/4/02), so quick input would be great

Thanks in advance,

That's basically it, the thing is cake to install.. took me about 20 minutes only because I am super ****. The map it is shipped with will be fine with just a DP, I am running that map with a CB, DP, intake, and efini Y-pipe right now with no problems. The PFC was shipped with two different maps though, I think it was the earlier ones that were shipped with the 'base stock' map, and the later ones with the 'base mod' map (someone pls correct me if I am wrong).. that would be my only point of concern for you with future mods, make sure you know which map you are running. Other than that you are good to go, I would recommend letting the car idle for a few minutes when you first start it with the PFC.. and check the boost settings on it (hope you got the Commander, it is well worth the extra $). When I plugged mine in it was set for 12lbs, don't know if you want to run that much boost.

Ok, so, that seems reasonable. Any set amount of time I need to let my car idle? Do i need to turn any accessories on (to load the system)?

Now, what about that 12lbs boost thing...how will I know what map I'm running (base stock vs. base mod)? Is 12lbs too much for stock fuel, etc? I guess gimme a lesson on why I gotta be careful. Remember I'll be preserving this for posterity so you can be verbose

I would reccomend printing out both the base stock and base mod maps either from the maps section on this forum or here:

http://www.exorzero.com/skotx/powerfc/

This will allow you to go into the fuel/ignition cells and compare them to what you have on the Commander screen.

Now 12lbs should not be too much for the stock system at all, provided everything is in good working order.. just depends how comfortable you are running it. You can adjust your boost settings easily, it is set for .75bar when it is shipped.. the manual shows how to adjust that better than I can explain it here. I didn't turn any accessories on, can't think of why you would need to.. I just let it idle for about 10minutes or so and then drive it around nicely to test it out. The boost was tempting me though and I gave in.

Heh, cool, thanks for the great input. MORE! I just want everyone's experiences on this. I'll see about getting what I create made as a sticky in this forum so it doesn't get lost.

The default boost setting is 0.80 which is ~11.4 psi (14.22 * 0.80). The two stock presets are 0.80 and 0.90; ~11.4 and ~12.8 psi.

Most of us let our cars idle for about 20 minutes, then it settles down a bit. You might get a little bit of idle weirdness for a couple days, but the PFC seems to smooth things out by itself. If your idle doesn't settle down, you may need to adjust it manually. Search for posts by Chuck on this topic.

I'd bet the change in my pocket that you'll have Base Mod maps. Just compare a few rows from your printouts. You may run a little rich with those maps and just a DP.

I can stand to run rich for now...more than anything I'm paranoid about popping my engine, so I'd just as soon run too rich than too lean.

skotx, thanks for the reply, I'll include that stuff in my writeup. Should be fairly short, but will eliminate repetetive questions in the future (and can be updated then anyway).

I just installed my PFC yesterday, over this weekend I will also be putting in my DP and MP and CB. I already have my intake and BOV in oh and I should also be installing my boost controller. My question is should I change the maps around? I don't know where to begin with the maps, or should I be OK with these mods.

Also, skotx, that website you've got is really cool. Good work on that. I'll use those maps to see what's up on my PFC when I install it. Thanks.

m0t03, you should check out skotx's site...there's maps on there for people with similar mods (GoodfellasFD3S and Spyfish). They've got porrted motors, so they might be different, but it's a start.
