Unknown FD mods - help?

I just recently purchased a 1994 RX7 and I don't know exactly what the performance mods are or could possibly be (especially in regards to any internal work).

The previous owner knew a little bit but there were no records and the work was done by the previous owner before him. He pretty much just drove it.

From what I've uncovered so far the mods are as follows:

99 spec Efini twins
Greddy compression tube
Greddy Intercooler (Stock Mount)
Greddy/Trust Intake
HKS SSQV BOV on both Air Bypass and Charge Relief
Greddy Profec Electronic Boost Controller
Deleted Cat (downpipe)
ACT Clutch (not sure if OEM or performance)
Pettit ECU

The car was set at 14.5 psi when I drove it home and I was a little worried about the high boost until the recent uncovering of a Pettit ECU while I was cleaning the car.

The previous owner claims that the engine was rebuilt by Pettit. If this was the case what can I assume could have been done based on those mods? My biggest question is if the motor was rebuilt to stock or an upgraded rebuild? I understand that it is all speculation but guessing at what is commonly done given those mods is all I have to go on. I tried emailing Pettit with my list of mods and VIN number and they haven't responded.

Also what kind of power can I expect from this setup as is?

Unless Pettit responds, probably no way to know exactly what was done internally. An educated guess would be mild (street) port and stock seals. Otherwise, those performance mods appear well chosen for a street car IMO. My concern at this point would be the supporting mods, fuel (injectors/pump) and cooling. And you would want at minimum a good boost and aftermarket temp gauge for monitoring. Do NOT rely on the stock temp gauge.
Someone else might chime in with a more educated guess, but at 14 to 15 psi, with a main cat in place and a decent cat-back my estimate would be ~ 330 whp.

That's the exact response I was looking for SgtBlue, thanks.

The car does have a boost gauge and water temp gauge. Although the water temp isn't hooked up so I'll have to do that eventually.

Cooling appears to be stock. I'm not sure. Radiator is located under the SMIC in an angled orientation with two fans on the back. I believe that is the stock location. Never really took the time to try and see what kind of radiator, though.

There is an aftermarket catback exhaust. Haven't really looked at it too closely to see what kind. Never really checked for main cat but the car is fairly quiet so I'm sure it's in place.

That's the stock orientation of the radiator. Biggest concern with that is if you still have the OEM radiator with plastic end tanks. They have some history of failing with heat and age. A good quality all-metal radiator is desirable. Fluidyne and Koyo are two popular flavors. The Air Separation Tank (AST) has the same problem and solution. All-metal versions of the AST are available from multiple sources too.

If you haven't already, go over to the 3rd Gen. Section. A down-loadable version of the Factory Service Manual is available in the FAQ sticky...along with ALOT of good reading to get you up to speed with the car.

Not sure what restrictions you have on posting, but when your able there's also a mid-west section here: https://www.rx7club.com/midwest-rx-7-forum-32/. I know there are a few other guys from Wisconsin.

Thanks again. It's in storage now and it's too cold to do any work on it for now. There are other minor things I need to do. There seems to be an exhaust leak around the turbos/manifold somewhere and a possible vacuum leak as the secondary turbo is intermittent.

I plan to remove the turbos to check for the exhaust leak and then redo all the vacuum lines with silicone ones. I want to keep the stock sequential setup for now as I'd like to see what Mazda did before going non sequential or single.

Did you ever get a response from Pettit? I live about 30 minutes away from the shop. I usually go there for my tune ups and stuff. I can relay any questions you may have.

Thanks. I resent them an email. If I don't hear anything I will try calling sometime next week. If I need any help I'll let you know.

Are they on this board at all?

i see you are in Wausau... i have a home in Minocqua (actually outside of Hazelhurst) and one of my engine customers (your engine modded in a Miata) lives in Wausau.

the Hazelhurst home was my summer lake home but is now year round generally on weekends. i do pass thru Wausau on my way up and could stop by sometime.

i live north of West Bend not too far from Road America.

as posted previously, you have a good group of mods, albeit dated, for 350 approx hp.

the FD is a thoroughbred and since the engine is of small displacement and makes a lot of power it really needs to have everything just right.

even at 350 hp the motor is producing 5 flywheel hp per cubic inch!

fuel, ignition and tune need to be on the money.

do it right and you will be well rewarded by the FD. any questions: howracer@gmail.com

good luck,

howard
