turn signals do not work when headlights are on

hey guys im just wondering if anyone has anyone has ever experienced this before, ive read through a bunch of posts and threads but could not find anyone with the same issue. there are similar threads that i tried to pull info from with no luck.

anyways last night was the first night ive had my car on the road actually street driving it and i noticed that when my headlights are turned on my turn signals do not work at all, when i set the light switch to the middle setting i can hear the relay clicking slower and with the headlights turned off they seem to function normally. checked my fuses, checked my powers running to the "turn signal cpu" or the black box, and when looking at the wiring diagrams it does'nt look like the headlights and turn signals are wired together in any way.

i will be working on the car again tomorrow so if anyone has any tips or a direction to point me in that would be great.

"light switch to the middle setting."

What does this mean as there are only two positions besides the off position. Do you mean the first position which turns the driving and dash lights on but not the headlights. The second or last position does turn the headlights on.

And is this an S4 or S5?

Also, what does "seem to function normally" mean as if they either do or they don't.

Check the grounds for the turn signals. Possible that it's grounding through the headlight or parking light and then losing ground when the light providing ground is on.

This is a very good point as the turn signal switch and the headlight switch, dimmer switch share the very same ground wire. The ground wire is found in plug JC-02 which has 6 Black wires (all grounds) and it's found down at the fire wall near the steering column.

hey sorry satch i left some info out. the first setting to turn the dash lights on makes the relay activate slower but still functions. the car is an s4. and the turn signals function completely normally without the headlights on.

I will definitely look at the ground for the turn signals tomorrow. I did notice a few ground wires not connected around the relays at the front rad support area. without a wiring diagram that was legible i wasnt sure what they were for.
