Honestly don't know much about cars, so I'm looking for advise. Just acquired my Dad's car that was in process of being renovated before he passed away. He had completed the body work he was doing and had gotten it running well, but it appeared to be leaking transmission fluid. Dad's buddy who was with helping him some with the car said that he thought it was "just a line not fastened on tight". (Bob really isn"t much of an expert on car repair though.)
The car starts easily and sounds great, but was afraid to drive it without knowing the true extent of the problem. I didn't want to blow the transmission. We had a mechanic who does house calls come by and take a look - just for diagnostic purposes. He thought it was " the transmission pump". He didn't really clue me in to how big a problem this is though. If that's the case, does this mean it needs a new transmission? Or is replacing this pump a relatively simple fix? Am I looking at a lot of expense to fix this?

Ok.First things first.
you need to state your CAR year and Series..Type of body(coupe,convertable,whatever).
Engine type(turbo or Normally aspirated/NON turbo)
Transmission..5 speed or Auto.

If it IS a 5 speed manual and BOB says it is a transmission pump..Run over him the next time you see him as he doesn't know cars.

OK! OK! BTW...I did read the rules and as much of the stickies as I can absorb. Sorry I didn't mention that it is a RX-7, but frankly, I thought all the cars referenced in this club were RX-7. It is a 1990 convertible. Honestly didn't think that part mattered. I should have mentioned that it is an automatic transmission, however. Just overlooked that. Beyond that, I don't know anything about the car. Like I said, I'm just learning...and I mean everything. I realize this lady has wandered into a boy's club here, but I had hoped that I could ask questions and learn about the car. Didn't mean to be an irritant.

No worries. It's not a gender thing and 'Cat G' doesn't really give a hint about it either.

None of us was born knowing about RX-7s. But even in the new member area it is a bit unusual to have a new member that is so new to the subject. This forum is mainly RX-7s but occasionally there are some other Mazda rotary topics. And within the wide world of RX-7s there are three main 'generations' as well as series sub-divisions within the generations. So, year, model (coupe vs vert) and, for your question, transmission type are practically prerequisites for specific, meaningful answers.

To your specific question, I'm not aware of anything really special about the auto trans that would require a Mazda or RX-7 specialist. If the fluid level is correct and the leak is minor and you are able to change gears while stopped with the brake on, it is probably safe to drive to your friendly local transmission shop for a check-up. Could be as simple as a leaky fitting to/from the cooler or the o-ring at the speedometer cable.
