Really need some help, Overheating?

So I just picked up my first 1987 GXL RX-7 and it's pretty awesome, except for it's problems. It's has a pretty bad flooding issue which I can over look for the time being but it's real issue is that it seems to be overheating. I will try to describe it to the best of my ability.

So once I am able to get it started it idles up to about 2500 and then slowly drops down to normal rpm, well actually a little lower(500-ish). Temp will stop at around half way when the car is still, once I start driving it goes up to 3/4th and thats where the fun starts. Once the car comes to a slow point (5-10mph) beeping comes from the dash and the car dies out. Should mention there is coolant smoke coming from exhaust and engine bay too after it dies.

After that happens, from under the hood, there is lot's of hot air and coolant coming out of the overflow tank. This thing is spitting out coolant whenever it gets the chance, along with the hot air. The overflow tank is also what looks like boiling at this point. Not just small bubbles, BOILING!

I have already replaced thermostat and tried draining the radiator but I am just at a stand still right now and need some expertise.

I will greatly appreciate all help, thank you!

welcome to the board.

probably not the news you want to hear for your second post on the forum, but it sounds to me like your engine may have lost a water seal.

do a system pressure test and check for signs of antifreeze getting into the chambers.

if for some reason it's not a seal, then since you said you already replaced the thermostat, you may also want to check the radiator cap too.

I recommend getting a Factory service manual. You can find it in the FAQ. I had a similar issue when I got my 88 GTU. I did a few things to it and the problem has gone away.

1. Replaced the radiator caps with new OEM units.
2. Replaced the thermostat with OEM part.
3. Flushed coolant.
4. Removed air bubbles from radiator and hoses. per FSM.

I also disconnected the hose going to the Idle air control valve and squeezed the top and bottom radiator hoses until i saw coolant come out. Did this with the filler and radiator caps tightly secured.

Also, check your radiator cooling fan clutch to make sure it's working. 4AT cars have an electric fan in the front of the rad, 5 speed NAs don't have the Efan.

Clean any debris from the front of the radiator and make sure all shields and fan shroud are intact.

I also replaced a broken coolant sensor that screws at the bottom of the radiator. However, I'm not sure if had an effect on the coolant issue.

My car hasn't overheated or smoked since doing all these things.
