TX Price for a RX-7 FD not running?

Hello I am new to this forum, but not new to car forums as i am a member of bimmerpost. I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section, however as a new member I am limited to new member section for now.
My grandmother happens to live right next to someone with an yellow RX-7 and after doing a little research, I can tell it is an FD, it's NOT running, and the paint is fading. This car has literally sat in this same spot for well over 6-8 years now, it used to have a car cover over it though. I'm aware that this isn't much to go off of, however I was hoping someone could give a ballpark estimate of it?
I intend to talk to the owner, however he is a restaurant owner and works odd hours so it's hit or miss to see him when I'm around. Before I talk to him though I wanted to get some more information on the car so if perhaps make an offer, I know what I'm talking about. I am looking for a potential project car, and as a BMW enthusiast was looking at older M3 and Z3 models, however after thinking of the abandoned RX-7 I'm intrigued to reconsider. I'm almost certain he'd be willing to sell, as like I said it's been there for years, however I'm not sure what to offer him for the car.
After looking at running models for sale on this site, I was impressed by how well the value went up. My budget is about $5,000. I am not looking to spend too much on purchasing this car as I know it's not running and I'm sure it won't be an easy fix (or he'd already have done it). I would be willing to spend more on a BMW because I am more familiar with the cars, however I am not familiar with the Mazdas at all, let alone a rotary engine which I have heard is complex to work on/with. I completely understand the money/commitment necessary for a project car, and this will not be my daily.
So like I said, looking for a price to offer him for the car, and some new owner information, thanks

Too little to guess...however, it's usually cheaper to buy a car in the condition you want it to be in. But, if you enjoy the challenge, and your labor is free, the math is different. You may need to be your own expert on the Mazda, professional help for the BMW's is easier to come by. (I have both!) The shop manual for the Mazda is great, and the info on this forum is awesome in support of working on the Mazda. To me, the RX7 is more pure sports car, great fun to drive.

What is your budget for a good running car?
Are you OK with a paint faded car? For how long?

Non running FD sitting for 6 - 8 years? Ask how much they will pay you to tow it away. Or offer to tow it away for free.

Any car that has been sitting 8 years is going to require a LOT of work. One assumes that because it's an FD that it was parked due to a blown engine. Once the engine is fixed, then it's the matter of all the brakes, fuel lines, fuel tank, pump, filters, rubber everywhere on the car, cracked interior trim, rat removal, tires, body rust, etc. etc.

I mean, maybe if I could get it running on 1 rotor and the interior is in great shape, I might pay $2000. Delivered.

I bought a shell with a blown engine for 5000$CAN. But its a RHD so the price was lower than a LHD. I would buy it. Get ready to spend alot on it though, the engine rebuild etc... the list goes on.
Good luck, hope you buy it. Check prices of rx7's in your area and do a estimate on what it would be worth and go from there.

Questions like these are not really Technical.
It is a matter of Principal.

You have to ask yourself if you are willing to get into the situation of owning and sinking money into some else's lawn ornament because basically that is what it is right now.

It is only worth what you want to spend and if you are not prepared to spend then it isn't worth even considering.
I wouldn't be asking another person to decide your financial investment/expenditure as it's really a decision that should be make with your mentality, heart and soul..not someone else's feeling that you have all the time and money in the world to invest in an object that they can't even see.Frankly they won't be by your side to help,so the only way they are helping you right now is by Spending YOUR money telling you to buy a car that isn't mobile.
If that is helping Then they can volunteer for Unicef and feed the children by showing them pictures of Big Macs.

My suggestion?.
If you decide to take on such a project is first SEE the guy..Talk to him.
Ask him if he wants to part with it,as that is the FIRST big step in your plan.
Nothing else will help you before that is done.
After that you can use the resources of the Forum for Info if you decide to stay within the rotary realm of the car.

I won't tell you to spend.
I'll tell you to be prepared.
I'll tell to to look before you leap.
You say you are looking for a Project, and at this point it is no different than any other car project.
The difference in model and make are irrelevant as can be whatever you want it to be if you do decide to so.Toss a different engine in the bay or stay rotary which again is totally up to you as it is your money, your decision and your desire to do so.Not someone else's money.Yours.
You can easily find out what other "shells" are going for by taking the time to look on FS Sites,Car Forums,etc..But asking how much you should pay is Something that is just not answerable as it is totally up to the guy that has the cash.Which is YOU.

Now,Unfortunately I am going to shut this Thread down to let others with TECHNICAL questions get answered,as every time that someone answers this Thread it pushes TECHNICAL questions down the List.
Seeing it's your finances and your decision I welcome you to post any TECH question you have when you feel or purchase a car or just plain want to know what makes the car tick.
We'll allow the guys wanting attention to their car's Technical questions to get more exposure.
So with that,I wish you luck,Hope you make the right decision and stick around and join the group as a rotary fanatic.
Cheers STYX.
