New to the rx7 scene. Help

Hey guys so I picked up a 93 fd last week from the original owner with 66k on it. Car looks and drives great. Just looking for some advice on what I should do as to modification wise I've been doing research and everyone says something different.

So far car has an exhaust don't know what kind but it doesn't look or sound stock to me. The down pipe is heat wrapped so maybe that's upgraded too.

Going to purchase the petit racing tune up kit and their aluminum ast. And maybe that lower temp fan switch.

I'd like to change the tranny and diff fluid too. Any recommendations???

Thank you

Please Try to submit ONE post as all threads up here have to be read by staff for suitable content.

My best advice is looking at what others have on this forum and deciding what suits you and what direction you intend to take with your car.
Modifying these cars really gets expensive so if that is in your budget then you are gonna have a Ball of fun!!
Good luck.

*Downpipe is good. Wrapped is better, it helps with under hood heat.
*Aluminum AST and Radiator one two of the basic reliability mods. EVERYTHING on this car starts with cooling. It's not sexy, but there you go.
*If you don't already have one, install an aftermarket temperature gauge. IGNORE the stock gauge. It isn't linear and is worse than worthless as it gives unsuspecting owners a false sense of security.
*If you don't already have one, install a boost gauge. A basic need to monitor turbos.
*Change out ALL fluids. Transmission and differential are good. I think any brand 75w-90 for transmission and differential is fine. I prefer synthetic. Check the owner's manual.
*Speaking of fluids, don't forget coolant. Have a brake fluid flush is good too. Gives you a good baseline for maintenance.
*Check belts and hoses. Particularly the turbo coolant hoses which have a tendency to swell with age and heat.
*Check/change plugs. Do them one at a time and use a little anti-seize on the threads. Another nice-to-have baseline item.
*The FC thermoswitch will lower the threshold for the fans to come on from 108 C. to ~ 95 C. A very worthwhile mod but it's a little fiddly to R & R, requiring the alternator to be removed and some fat-finger dexterity. Not a HUGE deal, but you didn't say how experienced you are at wrenching.
*Get a copy of the Factory Service Manual, read thru all the FAQ stickys in the 3rd Gen. section.

I think few follow it, but the best recommendation I got as a new owner a dozen years ago of a relatively stock FD was to LEAVE IT ALONE. Don't do any performance mods for a year or so. Maintain it, fix anything that needs it and just learn about the car. Performance mods should be staged and only after supporting mods are done. This car is unforgiving. Not doing so can get expensive and make the car not so much fun.

*See my earlier post. Pretty much everything still applies.
*With that turbo, you have a standalone ECU. Do your best to find a local shop with someone familiar with the particular ECU you have....especially if you're not an experienced DIY wrencher yourself. You might also check out the single turbo section on this forum and do your best to familiarize yourself as best you can.
*Oil change intervals on rotary engines, especially turbocharged rotaries, generally should be a little closer than piston engines. It's only a fair-weather car. I would change it ~ 2 to 3K or so....a little longer if you use synthetic.
*Assuming you don't have an oil metering pump (OMP), premix at about 1 oz. of quality ashless two-cycle oil per gallon of gas. IMO it's not a delicate recipe and you don't need a measuring cup at the pumps. Just do your best to be close and make sure any err is on the safe side. Try to do it before filling. But don't loose sleep over it either way.

You may not yet realize it, but I've touched on at least one controversial subject...possibly two. It's not my wish to side-track the thread, but IMO modern synthetic oil is fine in a rotary....especially since you have a turbo version. The second somewhat smaller controversy is using the very expensive 2 cycle oil that is marketed as being "rotary specific"...like Indemitsu and Pro-Tec R for pre-mix. Read and decide for yourself. They certainly don't hurt. But IMO I've never read any reliable data suggesting they are even close to being worth the money.
