Unhappy New owner to rx7 need some help tips or advice plzzz!!!

Okay we're to start ? So my wife's had a 1987 Mazda rx 7 sitting in there garage for 8 years . Before parking they took very good care of it oil changes brakes rotors and any other problems the car had . And it was only one problem a small problem. Now I have taken over owner ship of the vehicle and the car was started here and there but the last 3 years it wasn't started . When I told he owner I was going to buy it off them he bought a new battery for it and it had a half a tank of gas in it that's been in it for 8 years . He tried starting it up with no hydraulic fluid in the clutch the evaporated out and the brake fluid what's almost gone he also said that the oil in the car was good witch was I checked all the fluids in the car myself . So here the first problem the car tries to start but just won't turn over . I took apart the entire fuel system and checked every thing the first thing I check was the fuel pump I took the hose off turned the key and it squirted out gas . So now I'm thinking the fuel pumps good at this point . ( the clutch was not pushed down ) ( and I drained old gas and put new in after I checked pump .) . I also took the fuel filter off and blew through it it's clear the tanks also clean as a whistle . . So now I put everything back together check air filter and spark plugs for a spark everything checks out . . I also added hydraulic fluid for the clutch also . Now I get in the car and try to start it up . And it still won't turn over and now the clutch goes down but won't pop back up . I saw th master and slave for the clutch is right next to were u fill the hydraulic fluid in the car also it a spot to bleed the line witch I will do tomorrow after work . And it's not leaking anywhere . So now I pull the gas line that God in and out of the engine and there bone dry no gas is even getting to the engine . So I back track and start over now the fuel pump is not working at all . However the new gass I put in the car was only 5 gallons that's the biggest tank I have .. Is there a sensor on the fuel pump if there's not enough in the tank it won't let the fuel pum work or is the fuel pum just burnt out because it's 29 years old . And oh the owner also sprayed start fluid in the air intake to start it it did start right up when he sprayed starter fluid in the car but didn't stay running . I also put mmo on the four spark plugs . I wish he wouldn't of tried to start it before I got the car . No wires are chewed up I searched the car top to bottom and inside and out .. However there must have been a chipmunk living in the airfilter at one point lol because I found nuts and and food and insulation in the top part of the air filter . If anyone can give me some advice or tips on this I would greatly appreciate it a lot and be very greatfull for the help . Thanks a lot and if I'm jumping all around and u don't understand anything and need me to be more clear I will try to get back to you and be more clear .

This is me and my brother picking the car up from Pittsburgh on Saturday ..

Cliff notes?

The pump won't activate in RUN position..UNTIL the car starts.
The Air flow meter must be hooked up as it gives a signal to the ECU to run the pump once the air being sucked into the engine keeps the flapper door on the AFM open.
Once that happens the relay kicks the pump to ON and it continues to give the pump signal.

Don't know if this is relevant or not, but my 91 RX has 100K miles on it, and when I replaced the transmission and differential oil it was BLACKKKKK. Might be something to service on this one in addition to the standard oil change and coolant flush.

Here's a link to the factory service manual so you can give servicing yourself a shot WITH some guidance. http://www.wright-here.net/cars/rx7/89_manual.htm

In the first post, you mention that the engine DOES NOT turn over. Have you tried turning it over by hand with a ratchet/breaker bar? Reason I ask is because if it turns over by hand but the starter does not crank, there are very few items could be buggering it up. Old, corroded starter/battery cables are a prime suspect, especially the ground cable due to the middle 'flag' terminal. It leaves plenty of copper exposed to corrode. Also, this is the most critical ground point as it is the return path for EVERYTHING attached to the body. Engine-specifc items such as the ECU are grounded to the block, which runs through the starter ground cable back to the battery.

If your ground cable is sketchy due to the middle terminal area being corroded, the car will misbehave. Two 24" cables are a good solution for this funky cable. See Aaron Cake's grounding article for more info.
