need help moving shifter for tranny swap

i recently bought a 1988 rx7 5 speed tranny to swap out my 4 speed tranny(which if somebody wants to buy it off me after i make swap thats cool send me a pm) i know you can swap trannys but the shifter location on the 88 tranny is farther forward like 4 inches maybe?.
what i dont know is how to change the 5 speed tranny shifter location and move it backward.
any input is great and pictures would be nice too
thanks

well i modded an 83 tranny to work in a 75 808 but that was a more involved method, an idea i had that actually worked. i've read that it's also just a matter of swapping the tail housing and that shaft. once u get them apart it's obvious what needs to be swapped. but there's still the issue with the tranny mount under the body. something u'll have to fab up. o and one other thing to swap, the speedo drive gears.

From what I remember you would have to dis-assemble the trans and change the tail shaft with one from an early series 5 speed, also you would have to change the shifter fork rods ,another trans to consider would be a turbo 11 trans,I use one in my 1982 RX7 Racer and It sits way back into the original hole in the floor,it may work well in your1979.......good luck

Yes^. I have a t2 transmission in my 83. I cut back around 1 1/2" from the tranny tunnel. The shifter sits a good 2" back from my original 12a tranny

Oh rotary god who art in heaven, give us this our daily rev to redline and forgive us for owning piston engines, as we forgive others for buying them. Lead us not into temptation to use cheap oil, but deliver us from carbon buildups. Amen
