TX Muffler Question

Hello all. Does anyone know of a company besides Corsa that has a muffler designusing a resonating chamber in the muffler to make it quieter? I am starting a build with the coming of the new year and I plan to have a straight-through down pipe and a resonated mid pipe, but I am concerned that the noise levels will still be a bit high. Having said that, I am not willing to sacrifice performance for the sake of rider comfort which is what led me to begin looking for something akin to the Corsa design. Could someone chime in that uses straight pipe to the muffler? Can you hold a conversation in the car while highway cruising and actually hear?

Its a rotary its going to be loud lol. But its not unbearable. And cruising at 3k you just have to talk a little bit louder.

I am not aware of any manufacturer that has produced a resonator that works well on a rotary engine, nor have I ever seen any winning race team use one. Non-turbo rotary race cars tend to use either a resonated "short primary" or "long primary" exhaust system in which the entire system is tuned as opposed to just one single component.

Where did you find a Corsa muffler that is reinforced and tuned for a rotary engine?

SMB makes resonated mid-pipes and other components. They're an Aussie-based company but I think there are some North American vendors. You might have to google. SMB Exhaust

Not certain, but I think Mangnaflow also makes resonaters MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust - Cat-Back Peformance Exhaust Systems For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

Sorry Sarge, I'm so used to reading in the 3rd gen section I neglected to specify. It's an FD3S. Evil, Corsa doesn't make the resonated system or any other for that matter for any rx7(i don't think). If they made that exhaust in just a generic, do-it-your-self type of thing I could fab it up but no dice. I was planning on using the resonated mid-pipe from Pettit, but if it doesn't work well i suppose I'll just buy some tube.

Oh, OK, I was just wondering if they figured out how to get one to work. Rotary engines blow up conventional mufflers, so they need to be made stronger by the manufacturer. Also, resonators only work in one frequency range, and the rotary engine operates in a different range than typical piston street engines, so they would need to engineer one specifically for this application. A generic universal resonator would not work, and could possibly amplify the noise or cause metal fatigue.

Every exhaust system component can be called "resonated", so I'm guessing that they are using that term for a conventional pre-silencer. However, I do not have any experience with the FD, so I am not familiar with this item. Pettit has actual racing experience, so I recommend calling them to ask about their products.

Be sure to state this in future forum threads. Turbocharger turbines tend to soak up as much as 40% of the exhaust noise, so it is important for people to know that the engine is turbocharged when discussing exhaust systems.

Thanks Evil I will be sure to specify in the future. I will also call Pettit before I start spending money to make sure that mid pipe and the racing beat dual tip exhaust are going to work for what I am wanting. I have some time as I am starting with the cooling system and then on to some BNRs.
