Question I'm bringing a red FD back from the dead! Some advice please.

So, I recently bought a 1992 JDM FD RX7 (twin turbo) from a friend. Its been sitting in the elements for at least 2 years and was quite dirty. It's only mods are a BOV, new clutch, and lightweight flywheel.

I've since cleaned it thoroughly and was surprised to find it actually in better shape than I thought it would be. It was missing a battery so I bought one and plugged it in to test the electrical (e.g. AC, windows, lights) all seam to work fine.

Now down to the important stuff; I know that they parked the car a few years back because the engine was idling rough, suddenly died on them and wouldn't start. They assumed that the engine was blown but never got a compression test on the car to confirm.

My question: If I do a rotary compression test and all seams fine, what should I look out for and what steps should I take before trying to start the engine from it having sat for so long?

btw, I'm going to replace the gas in the tank, new fuel filter, new plugs/wires, and add a little premix.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey man.Welcome.
Do a Comp Test First. here: Banzai Racing Compression Test
if that works then proceed.,
Clean the fuel system thoroughly.Get the tank cleaned up,flush the lines, put on New filter On pump and on car..Service your injectors.

Thanks for the advice! I figured it might be best to start with the compression test. The Banzai steps recommend warming up the engine before doing the test, anything I should do to help if I can't warm up the engine first?

Also when cleaning the gas tank I've read a lot of ways it can/should be done, do you happen to have a preferred method?

Just compression test it cold, it will still give you a very good idea of the engines health

The best method for the tank is to drop it and have it professionally cleaned, and if the pump is still good, put a new sock on it

So I got it running finally and it seams to run fine (i.e. no weird noises or bad smoke etc.) but it was really loud so I took a look under and the catalytic converter wasn't even there. Ordered a resonated pipe and got her hooked up which quieted it down nicely.

But I'm having a strange issue, once it warms up it starts to idle really low then just die around 200-300 rpm. When cold it stays running fine around 1000-1100 rpm for a while then warms up and the rpm's drop again and it dies.

Any insight into what might cause it to slowly putter down like that?

Well, I did a compression test and the front rotor looks great but the rear rotor has almost no compression, looks like I'm doing a rebuild. Thanks for the insights guys!
