Idle & emissions problems

Im gonna split this off into two sections so its easier to read. The car I got is a 87 GXL 5 speed

Idle: When the car is cold the idle will be very irratic. Its not going to 3000rpms to im guessing the AWS system isnt working. Also if I drive the car it will start bucking in the higher revs of some gears. I dont thing its a trans issue as it goes away when the motor is fully warmed up.

Emissions: Im failing my NJ inspection emissions test my alot. The car seems to be running very rich. There is also a "putting" sound from the exhaust and it leaks a little gas. Also when the car isnt warmed up white smoke will come out of the exhaust.

Things ive done already to the car: New NGK spark plugs and wires. Recently cleaned K&N air filter. Swapped out ECU for one from an 86 RX7

If anybody has any idea of whats going on please let my know.

You need to do a compression test to rule out if things are OK internally.
White smoke sounds like a coolant leak internally and that means you got to rebuild the engine.A compression test will tell you this.

and Ya,leaking gas?..they shouldn't even allow you to test that car until you get that fixed. If they do they are not thinking about the safety of their shop or the implications if that car is being dyno tested,if it catches fire ON the dyno.(rolling test)
Even leaking oil would not allow you to dyno the darn thing.

There is a small hole in the top of the radiator. So Im guessing thats where the coolant is leaking from?

I dunno..is it?..

You'd have to check that too.
I know that any shop doesn't like fluid leaks or exhaust leaks of any sort for emissions testing.

That sad part is ive taken it to a shop and they didnt even notice any of these issues...Do you thing the gas leak is caused by a bad damper or fuel injector?

It is possible, but please start out with a compression test before more guesses are made, and possible money wasted

So the compression test came back good, any idea on what i should do next? Would taking the BAC valve off and cleaning it do anything with my idle issue?

The engine will not go to 3000 rpm upon cold start up if the coolant temp is below 59 degrees or so thus this should not be an issue. Secondly, make sure th TPS's Green/Red wire reads 1 volt w/key to on after the engine has been warmed up as much as possible (20 to 30 minute drive should suffice).

This may be a dumb question, but do you have the air pump hooked up? Do you have a cat on your car, if so how many? Did you verify your tps?
