FD3S VIN...Determining the Year

I have a question about VIN numbers...I'm new here, so I applogise for any mistakes and for posting this in here.

I have a "1991" FD3S I purchased about a month ago from a Canadian Importer. I just got it home and have been picking around with it the past few days. After doing some investigation I'm starting to doubt the vehicle year, but have no idea how to decipher the VIN number. Any help would be great. I have posted some pictures on other sites and alot of people have been commenting on the car saying no way it's a 1991.....????

Here is a bit of info on the car:

Twin Turbo
Red Leather Interior, Red door panels, red rear panels, red seats etc..
Chrome around the gauges
every Option, Moon roof, pw, pl, cruise, a/c
Bose Acoustic Wave stereo
16" 5 spoke alum wheels, with mazda logos
mazda logos on front bumper
the front bumper looks like a Spirit R with the same lip
HID headlights..they seem to be stock
it has only 90,000kms (56000 miles i think, converted)
VIN FD3S100056
Light silver in color
has the Enki Yellow Spare tire

I know that the FD in north america didn't arrive until 1993 and that it's first year was 1991 in Japan, but a few people have commented saying it must be a 2001. I really don't think so, but would like to know for sure.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance

is that the actuall vin or one that is on the "title". This vin to the naked eye looks very made up. It is similar to the breakdown of the us code but it is missing alot.

JM1 Mazda Passenger Car
---
FD RX7 Series
---
33 Coupe
---
1 1308cc USA Spec
2 1308cc Canadian Spec
3 Manual Seat Belts& Dual Airbags
---
*Check Digit (Used to prevent fake vins, number changes)
---
P 1993
R 1994
S 1995
---
0 Hiroshima Plant
---
###### Serial Number

Example US Vin JM1 FD 33 1 3 1 R 0 310000

Hope this helped. PS it looked like he took FD3S added 1000 as the "serial number" and added 56 (just so happens to be the miles calculated over from KM)

the vin # is like 17 digits long. the FD(3rd gen) was introduced in 93. look at the vin plate on the car and i'm sure there's a site on the net that tells how to decipher the vin. do an image search on google for "fd3s" and see if urs looks like one of those. if urs is actually a 91, than u have an FC, which is a 2nd gen. and if ur post count is high enough, u might want to hang out in the 3rd gen section if it in fact is an FD.

But this got me thinking (yes, I'm too lazy to go outside to take a look)...

I got '92 FD (first registered 5/92 according to the export certificate), but you say first one came out in 93? Or first one in US? My car has been imported from Japan.

yes, in the US, the first FD was introduced in 93 and ran thru 94. in japan and other places they ran til 01 or 02. 92 was the last yr of the FC in the US.

Ok..

I think most people are mistaking the car for a USDM model.

This is a japanese import Right Hand Drive. Was driven in Japan until 2006, I had it imported through a canadian importer.

The 3rd gen FD3S rx7 was introduced in 1991 in Japan, the FC3S ending in 1990

The serial number FD3S100056 is exactly that, no JM1 or anything in front of it.

That's why the JDM models are called FD3S, calling a USDM model an FD3S is incorrect.

USDM serial numbers are 17 digits long
JDM serial numbers are 9 digits long

My Serial number FD3S100056 is stamped on the firewall, unlike the USDM model which is underneath the glass windshield. it is not a "title" for the car, it is the VIN number stamped on the firewall, written on import slip and on my Canadian registration.

What i'm wondering is, if anyone can identify the exact year or production date of this car with the JDM serial number?

I see all the sites for the USDM models, but they are no good to me.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance

^^^should give day it was produced.

1st digit after the FD3S tells you the series - so, no, definitely not 2001! Here's something to tell what the go is in regard to the Japanese calendar and vin.

Your serial number is the earliest one I've seen and is 91 production, you'll have to be especially cautious when ordering parts, as there's a multitude of changes in these early cars, particularly in the electrical department.

Naaan, I'm not in competition with nobody.
Just curious to find some of the first production FD3S's still rolling on the street.

To answer my own question, I found this link somewhere on the forum (cannot find the thread now) but here is the link:

Îïðåäåëåíèå äàòû âûïóñêà ÿïîíñêèõ àâòîìîáèëåé

Even if you cannot read Russian? just put in your VIN number and you can read the date it pops out when you click the button below car Make.

Turns out mine is in fact a 96.

I can run a Build Sheet if you'd like, got the whole production run at my fingertips for EVERY CONTINENT! In doing so, I've found quite a few strange quirks such as some really early Type X FDs with manual transmissions and 3.909 diff gearing from the factory...

Also, chassis serial or VIN numbers are stamped into the firewall of every FC & FD regardless of domestic market. Mitsubishi does this too, but in the Japanese Chassis Number style, as I found out when dabbling around with CD/CE9A Evos. My 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage was given the same treatment too, ala CA5A-043407

Your car was built October 23rd of 1992. It's a Type-X. Came with airbag, has a sunroof, 4 person seating, and the normal suspension. It was built in Nippon which is the actual name for the country of Japan though sometimes its pronounced Nihon.
