FD Speaker Configuration

Hello everyone. I just bought a 93 Touring RX-7. I am very excited and so is my son as it will be his at some point. I am looking forward to making this car special for us. We quite a bit of work ahead of us but it will truly be a labor of love. My question today is around the speaker configuration. I have the Bose stereo. It is not functional. So, I will be replacing it. From what I can tell, there are 5 speakers in the car (2 in the front in the door panels, 1 in the middle of the dash and two in the back connected to the Bose wave system. First does this sound correct? I've read other posts that seem to indicate that the two back speakers are subwoofers with a separate amp driving them. This doesn't seem correct to me as it would logically seem that full range sound would be needed in the back as well as the front. Also, I am trying to decide if I should simply replace the Bose Wave system with full range speakers. Any opinion or experience around that is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm old and not an audiophile. And I like electronics as much as Bin Laden like ham sandwiches. But it's my understanding that all the speakers with the BOSE system are individually amplified. So they don't play well with an aftermarket system. Changing anything requires changing everything...again, this is my understanding.
The non-BOSE systems in the Base and R models have full range speakers in the side panels just behind the seats...where you have a little storage ledge of some sort. Most owners going to an aftermarket set up look for panels and speaker brackets from a Base and 'R' model to add those speakers...and then find a non-bose hatch carpet. The added advantage is you gain significant space under the hatch too.
Again, I'm no authority, but looks like there's a couple of sticky threads here dealing with the BOSE system Interior / Exterior / Audio - RX7Club.com and a search might turn up more info. Good luck.

Buy a stock head unit! I have a aftermarket, it sucks and alway looking for a clean stock one, sound is not quite right. There out there, I believe some 626's had the same head unit!

I swapped out all the bose stuff for other brands (JL mostly), but kept the snake.
The door speakers are Focal, the amp mounted in the rear hatch is a 4 channel JL, The 2 JL 6.5" subs (Yes, 2) are mounted inside the bose snake and the headunit is Alpine. I did away with the center channel dash speaker for a 2-gauge pod.

My '93 Touring had no rear speakers. Doors, dash and Bose snake, which is a subwoofer. The fader function on The headunit is how I adjust my subwoofer volume.

Here's a couple links for ya

Yes there are five speakers overall - one for each door, one on the front dash, and two inside the rear wave compartment (they are isobaric speakers). Each speaker has its own amplifier (now I'm not sure if there are two amps for the rear two woofers or only one, I'm thinking one though). So there are 4 amps in the car.

Door speakers (and dash one too I think) are 4 ohm speakers. Rear woofer speakers as far as I know 2 ohm each.

If I were you, I'd not replace the rear woofers with aftermarket ones. The rear towers sticking out higher fill the cabin with a very engaging bass for me. That's why I'm keeping the Bose speakers and woofers.
Aftermarket headunits work fine too.

Actually I've just checked - there are two amps for the rear two woofers (isobaric speakers). I've one sitting in my home (fully working, no problems at all) for sale.

The 20+ year old paper cones and 5 different 20+ year old amps were among the 1st things I got rid of when I bought my FD.
I started fresh with the whole system, but wanted to keep it as stock looking as possible, i.e. keep the snake. That's why I stuffed a couple speakers like these inside the snake, and stashed a single nice quality 4 channel amp in the hatch to run everything.
