Emissions test in Houston, TX
Hello everyone. Im picking up a 93 touring in Louisiana and bringing it back to Texas. It didnt require emissions testing in Louisiana but it will in Harris county. Ive heard there is a difference in testing equipment and staff knowledge when it comes to rotary engines and was wondering what I should look for/watch out for? Or if anyone knows of a good place in Houston area, I'd be willing to drive a little ways (maybe an hour).
I know I should get it warmed up on the highway, turn off lights, etc. and not let it cool down very long before the test. I also hear it helps if you tell them not to be aggressive on the throttle. Is it worth it to empty the catch tank under the throttle body? or will driving it on the highway for 45 minutes take care of that?
It has a pettit intercooler, intake, downpipe, highflow cat, catback, and PFC but is stock otherwise.
Thanks for the help

I don't know how it is in Texas but in Colorado we have a bunch of idiots and no choice since the only approved place is Air care Colorado. They wouldn't listen to my suggestions, they didn't run the fan on the dyno and ignored my beeping flashing temp gauge. Luckily no damage was done since I stopped them but I failed twice before that. The second time I pinched the vac hose to the catch can, ran a gallon of E85 on a full tank (A trick that had worked before) but still failed. I partially blame it on the techs over there but the rx7 does run rich by nature. Having premix didn't help and old plugs should have been changed.
Good luck and make sure they run the fans... I can't believe I have to say that.

Thanks for the tips. I acutally had a couple hours after i got off work and decided to chance it without changing the plugs. I drove for about 50 minutes beforehand and didnt wait longer than 10 minutes to get on with the test but failed it. Only failed the hydrocarbon at low speed (15 mph). I was around 240 and passing was around 135 or so. Passed the 25mph barely and the others by a wide margin. Had to drive to 3 places to find a working, calibrated dyno tho and even then he asked me how many cylinders
So now I'm going to wait for the plugs to come in and before swapping those I was gonna put some seafoam in the tank to see if it was carbon buildup that failed me. I wouldnt think thatd be it tho since I passed the 25mph test. I'll also clamp the catch can this time (forgot to do that). Was thinking it might be the timing or a clogged cat? The pre-cat was removed by the previous owner but I've heard you can pass without it so long as the airpump and cat are there.
Any other suggestions/tips are appreciated. Only have to do this a couple more times...

The results are in...I passed
Just wanted to wrap up this thread with what I did to pass the emissions test. I used a bottle of liquid seafoam the day before the test. About 60% in a half tank of gas, 30% in the oil, and 10% in a vacuum line. It took a long time get the vacuum line to "drink" the liquid because of the position so I didn't use much there. Probably would be easier with the spray. Then ran that tank of gas and filled up again with 93. Day of the test, changed the spark plugs & wires, oil & filter, and warmed it up on the freeway for about 30 minutes. Then right before the test I clamped off the purge tank and passed by the skin of my teeth. It looked like it was going to fail at first but gave me a second chance at the end.
