Continued steering woes
Hello,
I have an '85 Rx-7 base model with manual steering.
The steering had a lot of play in it and after searching through the threads it sure seemed like the steering box was worn. The car has 83,000 miles on it.
I got a remanufactured steering box (spendy sucker) and had it installed yesterday.
Although the play in the wheel is now gone, the car still wanders on the highway. It also does not return to center after turning a corner. Is it supposed to?
They did an alignment on it too.
The tires are brand new and I could not detect any appreciable play in the pitman arm due to worn bushings.
What am I missing?
I do not have a standard to judge by but it does not seem right.
I also noticed that the shop I took it to filled the steering box with grease, I thought gear oil was specified. Could this have any bearing on it?
I am trying to get the car fully sorted to give to my daughter and this is proving frustrating.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

Definitely should not wander and it should return to center. I have a remanufactured box in mine and it doesn't exhibit either of those things. The wandering could be tires or alignment but the not returning to center sounds like a problem with the box or the installation/adjustment.
