bad differential

I bought an '85 RX-7 a month ago and noticed it had a noise emanating from the rear . I thought it was brakes or bearings. I replaced both and the noise is still there and turns out to be the differential. I checked with the local repair shop and they are estimating $800+ for a removal/rebuild/re-install. This assumes the gear set is still good. I should be able to remove and replace it which would save a lot of labor charges. Still $400+ for the rebuild. It is a basic model, S I think and has a solid axle not IRS and it isn't limited slip. Is there a reasonable priced source for a rebuilt unit I can swap out. I did a search and found mainly LSD types around $800+.

I have never tried to rebuild one myself and doubt I have the right tools or know how to make it a happy ending.

I am open to suggestions.

Thanks,

Craig

Search "Kia differential" in the first gen section. The front pumpkin from mid to late 90's Sportage will bolt right in and give you added punch. They're 4.77.
