Alternator Belt Slipping
While changing the exhaust in my series 1 I had to remove the air pump since it was not needed when I put headers on the car. However, without the extra belt for the air pump, the belt driving the alternator and the water pump squeals when I rev over 5,000 rpm's. My dad and I think that it has to do with the amount of surface area on the stock belt is not enough to drive the alternator and the water pump. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the solution? Yes we have replaced the old belts with new OEM belts

Alternator Belt Slipping
This is fairly common and your dad was spot on. However, it usually manifests as the water pump slipping. either way, its the same belt. Now is a good time to upgrade to. FD or Taurus Salt with a dual sheave adapter pulley from Mazda Trix. Chances are your alt is probably tired anyway, so two birds with one stone

what i did was throw a yahoo belt on there it goes where your waterpump / airpump/ main pulley will go its about 8 bucks from any store...it helps to take off waterpump pulley and put it on there first and pry it on while rotating crank with a 19mm breaker bar....i forget the part number ..look up yahoo belt! it keeps your water pump going if you eat an alternator belt. as far as the belt being loose mine did the same thing until i cut the adjuster bracket and extended it with a peice of flat stock, minimal welding required. just dont go too far you will hit the hood, about an inch and a half is fine

the first thing you do after taking off airpump is yahoo belt otherwise if you lose alternator belt there is nothing powering waterpump....dual sheave is nice but you dont really need it..def nice but stock is fine but u need that yahoo belt as back up for water pump..its 8 bucks or you can look here ....

If you think about it,the faster the engine goes the faster it has to move coolant.
If the water pump only has "half" of it's potential to rotate due to one belt being removed then it will be Compromising the effectiveness of cooling the engine. It will have a tendency to cavitate.
Now,Price wise, you have to consider that you will need Another Belt of the same size to replace the one that you are taking off (that old Air pump belt is longer than what the "other one that you will use").
So 2 identical belts are needed. One that was one(and will remain on) and one that you need to purchase to match that belt.

So dual sheave would be a better way to go over the yahoo belt then? Thoughts on the clutch fan maybe moving towards an electric fan?

I honestly believe that a E fan is just as good as the Stock fan..meaning they are equal.
Well unless you get some contraption of a fan that should be on the back of a boat in the Everglades!
I went to an E fan to "clean up" the engine bay,and that was about it.It had nothing to do with any cooling issues as the stock fan worked just fine no matter what Mods I had done to the car.
If you go to an E fan you must then consider what else the alternator is going to be powering as you now have about 30 amps you have to worry about. Most guys upgrade the alternator if they go to an E fan so to you it's not just the price of a fan,it is the extra price of an upgraded alternator set up also.
Heh..it always starts off as "20 bucks"....

one of the Links had the pulley at 20 bucks..
Oh I forgot to mention that an EFan should have a good shroud for it,so it can effectively suck air through the rad.
The stock shroud is pretty good at that..and PLUS it makes a great tool holder!
I missed that "shelf" when I went to an E Fan..lol!
