90 gxl n/a iddling problem
Hi guys,
im new to this forum, and to the rx7 world, this is my first post
on this forum
i know the basic but i'm no mechanic.
i know this is a casual problem, but i cant find whats going wrong..
i got an 90 gxl stock with 180k on it
here a the problem that i have:
-very bouncy idle
-it idle at 1500-2000 on cold start, very unstable
-it dies after 30sec-1min,unless i keep my foot on the pedal
-when i drive it,it dies if i take my foot off between the 1-3gears,
on 4th and 5th(highway) its fine.
-my oil smells like fuel
-there is a smell of gasoline..like its running too rich
-the car is been sitting in the garage for 2months now.
she was backfiring like crazy & smoking lots of oil
-i change the stock exhaust system to a full straight pipe(Racing beat style)
i also change the fuel filter & and all the vacuum line under the hood.
**double if not triple check that all the vacuum line.
since then no backfire or smoking oil.
my concern is does the spark plugs, tps, ignition timing,02sensor could be the problem?
(i haven't check them)
what else should i check to make this car idle properly
thank you for your time & help.

You are on the right track.
keep going on your list mentioned at the bottom of your post.
Also,Quadruple check the vacuum lines..it still sounds funky.

Is your BACV still intact?
You could start by checking that your timing is properly set. Align the yellow mark on your pulley with the pin by rotating the pulleys. Then remove your CAS, align the dimple with the notch, then restab it taking care not to have it move much. If you take the cap off of the CAS, it should help you keep the timing relatively close. You can get it precise by hooking up a timing light to the L1 wire while the car is running and checking if the yellow mark is still matched up to the pin.
Next would be to adjust your TPS once the car is fully warmed up. You want it to be at 1-volt.
Hopefully your throttle body hasn't been tampered with.
You can try to locate some vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid (minimal) around hoses and mating surfaces like the air intake. Be especially careful around the exhaust manifold.

you are right, compression test is definitely one of the first thing to check before buying any parts. (witch i did 4months ago) compression was 100ish in the front, 110ish in the rear
so i assumed something else was wrong,
i was about to buy parts(a month ago),when i find out that it lost compression in the front housing &
- a faulty injector
-tps was off
-ignition timing
-intake air temp sensor wasn't operating
-possible vacuum leak
it was a combination of things that really made it run poorly
the car is sitting down in the garage now..im not sure what to do with it
sell it...part it...or re-build it.

sounds like you may have a vacuum leak. Sometimes they maybe hard to pinpoint. We use to pour some water between the manifold and engine block at the dealership back in the day.
