86 n/a GXL cooling issues

Hey everybody! First off let me explain, got my FC and everything was running great. i noticed the heater was not producing heat, so a friend who works on HONDAS suggest to get a new thermostat. (keep in mind this was 2 years ago and i was new to cars and the rotary itself, and said HONDA Guy didn't know jack $@#T about our engines) so we buy the thermostat and begin to unbolt the thermostat housing. 1st bolt comes out ok then the 2nd cracked! now i got to drill out the old bolt and get a new one, no biggie right. so i leave the car and key at said friends house and he decides ( with all his great car knowledge) to rig a rubber hose from the thermostat housing to the hose where you fill the coolant. I.E there is no thermostat in he leaves it out and decided to drive it to my house about 3 miles away I get a txt saying he is down the road and look out side and see a huge trail of smoke heading my way, coolant was everywhere I knew my car was just murdered
I don't know why he did this nor do i ever IN MY LIFE trust him with my cars.
anyways i got the FC towed to a local mechanic who has worked on mazdas for sum 30+ years. He tells me that the water pump has gone and i need to replace it and he thinks i might have a cracked rotor housing. but because he likes me he will do an overhaul for the VERY CHEAP PRICE of $6000
. total rip off he would not even change the water pump for no less than grand. soo it was up to me to learn and do it my self. I am very proud to say that i completed this task of replacing the water pump and seals with just my tools and the haynes manual. and fixed the thermostat. now that i finished i tried to fill up the car with coolant and start it. It did start but it has not sucked up the coolant or it seems not to. when i closed the cap i was trying to feel for pressure but i did not feel any would be a reason as to why there is no pressure and why is the coolant not being sucked IN at the housing??
i know i wrote a lot but thought i would give full detail to get the best answer thank you.

the coolant is what creates pressure.
it dictates the pressure in a closed space..and also can act as a vacuum to suck coolant into the system from the reservoir to add coolant to the system.
If you just filled the engine with coolant then it needs to actually expel the air in the system.
If the coolant moved the air but there is less coolant than what the system requires then you won't really see pressure(like a spew of coolant when you pop the cap) until the system is actually close to OR at the full capacity level.
