85 GSL-SE rear brake rebuild ?

I am building a 1985 GSL-SE rear end for my Miata powered 1961 Sunbeam Alpine, yes I am crazy. I have a Mazda rebuild kit and boots and most of the parts are back from powder coat. The calibers are marked with L and R but the mounts are not, are they the same left and right? Also the rebuilt kit did not come with the bolt boots which I pick up at the auto parts store, but the only ones that looked the same are for a 1986 and newer is this normal? Here is a picture of the mounts. https://toyanvil.smugmug.com/Cars/Su...RIMG0003-L.jpg

You should be able to use the mounts on either side.

uh..I don't think they are the same..
Look at them..the clips are even in different positions if you put them on the mount.
The big springy one would be where?...(see that?)
..and if you noticed when putting those clips in that they would only fit in that slot.

I'd try some research in the 1st gen section.
NO offense but I kind of shudder when new guys start giving other new guys advice.

I installed the clips, to make sure the powder coat is not in the way. The large ones will be on the bottom, they will fit in all the spots the same. The mods will not let me post in the 1st gen section, and I did not see anything on this in there. I have also tried to look up part numbers, to see if there is a left and right. I do have some time, I still need to cut the rear end down 7 inches and weld on spring and sway bar mounts.

None taken, if the pads for the clips are the same size as they appear to be in the picture, than the clips should be able to go in either position. Do you have a picture without the hardware installed?

Where did you buy the clips? Those are hard to find.

On a side note. I do my own powder coating and did all my brake parts. I did run into one issue. Because the powder is built up about 3mm once the clips where put in the brake pads would not fit. I had a choice to remove the powder in the clip slots or grind down the ears on the pads a little. The pads need to float and not be too tight. The job of the clips is to put a little tension on the pads.

Yes that is true, I would remove the powder coat from the "pads" where the hardware sits, that way you don't have to grind down the ears every time you replace brake pads. I've run into this issue when people paint their brakes, and the additional buildup of paint in that same area causes the pads to jam and not to float, they obviously end up wearing out prematurely. Be careful when you remove the powdercoat, you only want to get back to where the factory had that area machined to, if you take to much and have too much slop, the pads will end up floating too much and making a clicking noise.

If I am not mistaken the pins that the calipers slide on should dictate the way that the calipers go onto the rotor.
SO..if you look at the location of the installed pin on the bracket you should be able to tell which bracket goes on what side of the car.
I am assuming that you took the slide pin off in order to powder coat the brackets?

All pins and bolts were removed to powder coat and all machined areas were taped off. The pins and bolts will fit in both spots the same. Here's my fronts after powder coating, no powder coating on machined areas. I also add one of the Miata motor I installed and the car.

I got all the parts back from the powder coater.

The mounts are the same left and right.

Now, I just need to cut it 7" narrower.

I had the anti-rattle plates powder coated the match the caliper, I think it looks better and matches the Sunbeam front caliper.
