83 12A wont start.
Hello, my 83 Rx-7 won't start. It was running rich for a while but now it won't turn over. I replaced all spark plugs/wires. Cleaned the Carb replaced the fuel filter. Occasionally it will turn over then shut off after two seconds. It has a aftermarket Holley Carb. Any ideas would be helpful.

It reads Holley 6R. it has a fuel cell in the trunk and I've been trying to use 93 non ethanol, which in Iowa is really hard to get non ethanol, and it has been flooding about every other week. Idle was fine I got it to run steady at 800rpm. I read the it should be around 500-800 normally. As well as driving, it was a challenge. The car (I named Meg) either wants pedal to the floor to move or a light pressure but if I went in between she would shutter and she would die.

I would love to convert it back for various reasons, I would know what it is, plenty of information on them, easy to service for most the problem is I cannot find any. I have what I believed to be one but it looks different then what I've looked up.

I am having just about the same problem. At full throttle and around 40% and more, it runs good but, at part, but not light, it has just about no power as it, it just about comes to a stop, but, at light throttle, it does ok with some hiccuping though.

So possible cracked apex seal, timing, replace Carb hoses. I will look into that today. Random question. What is the best gas to use? Im using 93 octane without ethanol but that's hard to find in Iowa. Only two locations sell it without. Will ethanol hurt a motor this old/style?

unless you plan to go EFI, forget about using it.
not sure where/why we're considering cracked apex seal, but you can use a compression test if you wish.

ahhh ... progress, finally! this is why it's important to provide as much info as you can. you could have been on the right track many posts ago.
well, for starters, there's no way a stock pump is going to drive a Holley! hell, it's marginal for the Nikki. get something else ... something that has good FLOW and can do so at at least 7 PSI. i can vouch for Carter and Holley pumps because i have used Carter in the past myself, and my brother used a Holley on his car. you will also NEED a regulator. Holley has two popular ones that i'm aware of. one that serves 4 PSI and less and one that serves 4 PSI and more. get the latter. for what it's worth, you probably want to get a gauge, too - however finding an accurate one is not as easy as it sounds. i used a Summit gauge since i bought my pump and regulator from them. i can't speak to accuracy, but it at least seemed to react appropriately to regulator adjustments.
this is no guarantee that the car is going to run well, but it will definitely put you on the right path. make like a pistachio and get crackin'.
also, figure out what Holley you actually have or you could be in a for a long, frustrating and painful journey.

get a timing light if you don't already have one. i know AutoZone will allow you to borrow tools, so you shouldn't have that you have to buy one, unless you just want to. check the timing with it. i know the old RB catalog had a timing recommendation chart, if i recall. since everything is online, i suspect you should be able to find it on their site.

The standard pump on the 12A's is completely useless. I'm having almost the same problems as you, and I'm even running a nikki.
I can't really see any other carbies running with this POS pump, hell, my current one can hardly pump against gravity. I've got a universal Bosch one that I'm going to drop in some time tonight or tomorrow or something, hopefully it'll make a difference.
