FL General advice

Hey there guys, new member to the forum. I own a '88 RX7, and I want to put a great deal of work into her, but there's a problem. I have little to no experience with rotary engines and the mechanics involved with the engine, and I wouldn't feel right if my rotary mechanic did all the work. If anybody could reference me to a guide or book that details the mechanics of the engine so that I can single-handedly mod my engine, that would be greatly appreciated. It's already in running condition with a few modifications, but there's so much more I want to do.

General Advice?...There is Too much typing and not enough time to answer that.
Besides it is already been Documented. You are ON The "official RX7 site" that can give you all of that info by Looking at the Info that has been Posted already.
Your Question is answered repeatedly in threads and can't be answered with one Reply.
You don't state what car you have(N/A or TII).,your goals, intentions or how Bad you want to get in the hole with this vehicle.
That is Personally UP to you,and nobody can rightfully answer such a vague question without being more informed.

My Best advice?..Start the Coffee machine up and start clicking threads.Honestly,I started this way.It is the BEST way to go,as you do not have to depend on anyone to Reply. They may not want to reply, they may not know,or may not even open the thread.
You get your Answers when you Look.!..and you get the "right ones" as you can choose which info to retain and what to toss!
Good Luck and Welcome to the Forum..
Now go and put up an INTRO!

Hahaha thanks man. Sorry for not specifying what I'm looking for, but really, there is so much I can. I have an '88 RX7 Vert NA, and I really want to keep the classic exterior of the car except add the OEM vented hood from the Turbo RX7 as well as the OEM spoiler. From there, just go crazy with engine mods lol but thank you for the advice, I've noticed that sporadic searching through the forums has answered most of my digging concerns. Let me go fire up my Intro!

General advice: Read the 2nd Gen FAQ, and especially download the 88 FSM.

If you want to learn more about the engine, you can watch the engine building videos from the below websites. Unfortunately, you can't really do much to the engine without completely tearing it apart, and this is probably something that you don't want to attempt for a while.
Free videos:
Pineapple Racing
Engine rebuilding videos that you can order:
Rotary Aviation
Mazdatrix
Atkins Rotary

I also have an 88 convertible that I bought used, this is what I installed:
- New Robbins top, professionally installed (I'm not a seamstress, lol)
- Optima Red Top battery with quick-disconnect marine terminals
- Upgrade to S5 stereo surround and heater vents
- Aftermarket stereo and power antenna relay
- New fuel pulsation damper, fuel filter, OEM fuel pump, and SAE 30R9 fuel lines
- Fuel injectors cleaned and "rebuilt" by Witchhunter, new manifold gasket installed on reinstallation
- New oil filter pedestal O-rings (two each)
- New fan belts, coolant, hoses, spark plugs, and plug wires
- KYB AGX dampers and Racing Beat springs
- Koyo all-aluminum radiator
- Red Line synthetic oil in the transmission and differential, Castrol GTX oil in the engine, Mazda oil filter, Fumoto F-106 oil drain valve
- New brake hardware kit (W-springs and liners), Mazdatrix DOT stainless steel brake lines, Castrol Advanced Performance brake fluid

As you can see, there is quite a lot to do even without cracking open the engine, and I didn't list the things that I had to repair.

You can add the Turbo II hood, but it will have slightly worse aerodynamics, and in bad weather it will shower the engine with leaves and water if it is not blocked off or re-routed with ducting. Also, your current hood is most likely aluminum, and some Turbo II hoods were steel, so you may want to be aware of inadvertently adding weight to the front end.

The OEM spoiler is designed to fit the coupe models, which have a hatchback. The convertible has a conventional trunk and was not produced with a spoiler, so the OEM hatchback spoiler isn't going to work well. If you want a spoiler, you can search for an original Finish Line (Mazda's aftermarket company) "aerowing" spoiler, or an independent aftermarket spoiler such as those from Mariah.
Mariah Motorsports by Design Energy Inc. RX-7, Rotary, KitCar and Sportscar Specialist

If you really want a hood scoop and spoiler, then you may want to consider selling your convertible and buying a Turbo II car before you sink a lot of time and money into your car trying to make it into something that it is not.

Thank you so much Evil Aviator! I bought my RX7 from a guy I knew who was the original owner, I'll post a picture, but the car is mint except for a few minor details. Only 78k miles! I've already installed Racing Beat Cat-back system, and I love how rare the model is, so I'll probably just keep that hood and look into a different spoiler. He reupholstered the OEM seats and installed a new soft top, no cracks in the dashboard, I love it lol I was thinking about porting my engine, but I read on a website that if your engine is already in running order, streetporting wouldn't do much considerable difference to HP or torque, but I'll still look into it.
