Lightbulb 170rwhp na fc3s

Hi all,

I've got a stock 1986 NA FC3S and I'm hoping to end up with a nice and peppy little car. My main power/handling inspiration is the Toyota 86, had an amazing time driving one and want to build something that competes!

Currently, my plan for non power related mods will be:
- Change wheels and tyres [Have just done this. Running 235/45r17 front and 255/40r17 rear]
- Coilovers
- S5 rear lights
- Cusco front strut brace
- Undecided on whether I'll upgrade the seats, and if so what to

Now, I'm also looking at getting around 170RWHP from the engine. I'm sure this would be easy enough with porting, but I believe the engine got a rebuild to stock port () around 30,000 KM (roughly 19k miles) ago.

I have done some reading into this, and have the following thoughts:
- Headers (rotary works seems to be a viable option. Being in Australia its harder to get Racing Beat parts)
- High flow cat (Not running a cat is an insane fine over here)
- Cat back dual exhaust (Really enjoy the dual exhaust look, even though its a bit heavier than a single exit)

Questions:
  1. How does my plan for non-power sound? I'm trying to get a well balanced car so I hope I'm heading in the right direction
  2. What power mods should I be looking at doing? How can I reach the power figure I want?
  3. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks for reading this far! Any links to tutorials and helpful threads would be greatly appreciated too

Thanks guys!

You should look into Tweaking the power with an aftermarket ECU to squeeze everything you can out of it.
The Thing with Modifications is that stuff can add up weight wise and you end up heavier and slower than when yo first started out.It may look good but it is slower..lol!
The Racing Beat exhaust for instance is about a good 70 pounds.

I think that's way too much tire and weight for a car that will make less power than a Honda Civic...Be smart, use weight to your advantage.

You might want to consider that 170hp is only 10hp above a stock S5 N/A (89-91) RX7. This is measured at the flywheel tho. But with a mild port job such as a Street Port, means of adjusting the fuel delivery (Apex'i SAFC or similar) and a good exhaust such as Racing Beat's offerings, it should get you pretty close to the goal

@misterstyx69: Is there a particular ECU that you would recommend for NA? I found this thread https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-r...worth-1093183/, but seems like gains will be nominal. Are there other products that would be suitable?
I'll also be sure to try be more cautious of weight, especially with what @DC5Daniel said. May end up changing to 16" with smaller tyres. I initially bought these wheels to be temporary since I got a good deal, but I've been eyeing SSR Reverse Mesh for a long time. Again, I need to research into wheel and tyre weights here.

@Akagis_white_comet: I'm aiming for 170RWHP not flywheel because its akin to the 86 power. I should currently be sitting at 120-130hp (I dont know if it was rebuilt with S5 housings or not). The reason I want to avoid rebuilding is because it was rebuilt 30k kms ago, so is a bit too expensive to justify when the engine is good. I feel like 170RWHP should be attainable with headers + exhaust (20-30hp from what I've read on here?), intake, proper tune (ECU?), and hopefully some other modifications if possible.

Thanks everyone! Hope I can still get some more great info
