MD Looking for reputable shops in the MD Area

Hey all, I'm new to the MD scene, just got my FD here and I've got two issues.

1: Need to get some interior done, Refurb my seats from leather to cloth w/stitching

2: Feel like there's something funky going on with my electrical... had the battery relocated and I don't think I'm getting full power to the starter. it goes *tic *tic *tic and if I just keep trying to start, it eventually just kicks over no problem.

TL;DR

Need a reupholstery shop and a good shop for electrical in the Laurel, MD area or somewhere close.

Thanks!

-e. - do you have a name we can call you by that's got more letters ? ! I live in Laurel myself, since 1980. Am an old retired fart with my first rotary, '86 FC na, for just over 2 years. Sorry I won't be of much source help on these 2 issues, but the guys who CAN help will be chiming in soon, you can he sure. Fendamonky (Levi) is over in Crofton area and super knowledgeable on much - has an FD under REconstruction as we speak. Wanted to welcome you to area. FYI - did you see the thread at the top of the page your thread is on ? We're doing a day trip into Virginia 5/15 Sunday - IHOP breakfast + parking lot talk, drive, overlooks, drive, lunch, drive, microbrewery, try to drive !

GoodfellaFD3S is selling a set of reupholstered seats on the forum here, there's also a guy in Bristow, VA selling a set of nice R1 seats.

Common issue on FDs. Three possible culprits between the battery and the starter. Ignition switch, clutch switch or security relay. See link posted by Molotovman for how to bypass the relay. Pettit sells a "kit" to send power directly to the starter also.

Thumbs up

You guys are awesome! I'll start going through the steps to check and ensure I get a twist and rev instead of click click boom... I mean start

Thanks so much for the feedback on vendors! I'll be checking them out and running this all down. I'm not really looking so much for used seats as I have used ones, I want to have mine redone so I'm the only one who will have farted in them.

Thanks a ton guys!

I'm late.... Been in the Laurel area for 7 years now... There are no rotary mechanics in the immediate area.
But hey, I have a few fc parts lying around.

If you need rotary specific work done I'd say head up to Speed1, they are in Lenhartsville, PA.

You've got Speed1 in PA, IRP in NJ, and I guess Angel Motorworks down in Hampton Roads. I don't have any experience with Angel though, so I can't speak to the quality or integrity of their work... Both Speed1 and IRP are pretty solid in my experience though

Thanks Levi.

There are a number of upholstery shops available. I know goodfella's guy does nice work.

The issue is you are getting voltage drop between the battery and starter. The fix usually involves running a relay to ensure the starter gets full power from the battery. Do you have any pictures of your relocation? If you can get the car to me I'd be happy to look it over.

Hey all, checking back in. So by local car guy word of mouth here I've got my car in at Custom Auto Fabrication (Custom Auto Fabrication, streetrods, hotrod, muscle cars shop MD - Home - Highland, MD). Don't know if any of you have worked with them but they have been awesome so far and are about 20 minutes away in Howard County, MD.

Heritage Mazda (formerly Russell Mazda) - Route 40, Catonsville, MD - ask for James - he's their RX-7 guy - he's knowledgeable - fixed my '93 FD.

Car flooded out - James at Heritage Mazda fixed it. Too far to tow it to Speed1.

Mike Quinn is in Mt. Airy, MD. Haven't had him do a lot to my FD, but he's really knowledgeable about RX-7's. Works out of his own garage. His business is Unique Precision Rotary - you can find him on the Web.
