DC Area Fall Road-Trip 2012
If you keep up with the DC Area Thread then you already know some of the details, but this is the official thread pertaining to the Fall Road trip. See previous trips HERE, HERE, and HERE
This year we will be doing it "Tour de DC" style. Here is the LINK to the tentative Route. The intention for this trip if to enjoy this great and scenic city that we live in/near. If anyone you know fancies themselves a good photographer, we'd love to have them along. There will be curvy roads with brightly colored trees all around, Monuments as backdrops, the DC waterfront, Potomac vistas, bridges, and tunnels at a minimum (especially if you are out front).
As you can tell by the map, we are limiting the actual DC surface streets that we will be driving on. We could definitely get better shots by rolling through downtown, but this is undesirable for many due to the stiff suspension/low ride height of our 7s. The route was carefully chosen but still tentative due to the unknowns that can crop up when driving in DC. Last year I scouted this route and found that some of Beach Dr. was closed early on Saturdays. I will again scout this route when I have a weekend free, and make adjustments accordingly.
As a word of caution to you all, we will hit some stretches of pavement that are good fun in Rock Creek Park, but we need to remember that we are in a fairly populated area where people regularly Bike/walk with strollers, etc. So please for safety reasons keep spirited driving at a minimum. (If you are interested in pushing the limits of your car safely and cheaply, let me know and I'll show you where/how)
As per our usual M.O. we will be starting the trip at a breakfast establishment for everyone who is interested to get some grub. This gives us the opportunity to show up at more flexible times. Departure time will be 10am, make sure you are there EARLY. There will be a short informal brief before departure so if you show up at 10 you won't know what is going on and will just have to follow everyone. If you are late you run the risk of us leaving without you.
I put the end of the trip at Great Falls park in VA because it is close to 495 and should make getting home easier for those who have to drive far to get there. As usual we will likely go out for lunch at the end of the cruise before breaking and departing home. I was looking at Great Falls Shopping Center (intersection of Walker Rd and 193) to be a good place to find something as there are multiple options available. At the park we can talk out what everyone is interested in doing.
Options for date are in the Poll above. As usual, the highest voted date with the most confirmed drivers will be the day we go on.

Awesome, we might be able to go rouge and stage some cool shots. I have some thoughts that I will try to test out during my test run. (Nothing that will get us into serious trouble)

So after going to the Great Falls Park this weekend, it seems like we need to change the end point of the cruise. They charge a $5 fee to get in the park and since we are just using it as a re-group location, there is no reason to pay it. Also 193, while still a decent driving road, has a couple patches in it. So I am open for options, keeping in mind we would like to finish near 495 and somewhere to eat. Perhaps we just pop into Mclean or Bethesda. Anyone know a good lunch spot in the area?

Rocky, I might recommend instead of heading over to the GW parkway staying on the MD side and using Clara Barton Pkwy. For one I think it's a prettier drive, and you could stop either at Carderock, or continue on a bit and stop at Old Angler Inn which is a pretty cool spot to grab a bite. Just my thoughts.

I'll look into the Clara Barton, I have never been on it. Right now though, I'm thinking that we may terminate the cruise at "Turkey Run Park" instead of the aforementioned Great Falls Park, due to entrance fee and road conditions. We will converse there about food and probably hop over into Mclean for due to proximity.

I would love to come down and I'm only two hours away. I have a few things to do in order to be street legal but that should be done by the 14th. I am supposed to be at Seven NOT Stock this month but 800 miles one way on an untested platform is a very bad idea imo. I do have traction issues with the insane power the car puts down so if it is rain or snow, I am not gonna be able to make it.

Great to have you all. Colt, Elio, hope you can make it
Dream, any more then drizzle in the forecast and we usually punt to another available date. This one might be a bit different since we are trying to time with the leaves. We will hold true to the dates harder, but no one wants to go out in the rain anyway.
