NC First time rebuild project!

I just bought a 1991 S5 NA. I have had 7s in the past but never had any issues with them in the time that I owned them. I bought this one for 500 bucks knowing that it wasnt running.

He didnt know what was wrong with it, other than the exhuast overheat light came on so he had a new system put on it. Then it just stopped running. (so he says). This will be my first build and I think im on the right track, maybe. I want to do it with a low budget and all i really want is a daily driver with some power behind it. The first thing i checked was the compression. The front rotor didnt even move the gage and the rear had one strong bump of about 80-90 psi. The car will hardly run, if i can even get it to fire. The lower plug smelled like gas and had oil on it. Soooo, is it safe to say that i need to start pulling the motor for a rebuild? Thanks ahead of time for any input.

Its probably a good bet that it needs to be pulled apart. At this point it doesnt sound like you have much to lose by trying to do the atf trick or any other miracle fixes before biting the bullet on a rebuild.
