Hey all,

Name is Connor. I purchased an FD a year ago from a somewhat questionable seller.. long story short, engine is out of the car and being rebuilt. I used to come on this forum to look at pictures before I owned an RX7, but now I'm in need of some community connections. I'm looking to share the story of my car's rebuild. I have a somewhat ambitious power goal but I'm confident that I have the right people in my area to help me get there. I work on cars and my pockets aren't as deep as I'd like.. just finding out how expensive owning an rx7 can be..

I'm in the same boat as you, so many ideas... some forum connections would be ideal!

Welcome Conner, you've definitely come to the right place. I'm not sure of any shops in the Cleveland area, but Defined Autoworks in Pataskala (~15 miles east of Columbus) is one of the best shops I know of, and one of the few whom I'd entrust my 20B FC to for work I cannot do myself.

If you're on Facebook, look for the Ohio Rotaries group. Most of us in Ohio are on there.

As for the FD specifics, our 3rd Gen Section here is a goldmine of information that you're sure to find very helpful. What are your plans for the car? Gonna stay with the twins or go single turbo? If you're sticking with the twins, look for Dale Clark's threads regarding testing each component of the system and doing anything regarding vacuum lines. He is THE MAN! Be sure to grab the FSM & Parts Catalogs from Foxed.ca if you haven't already.

No worries about being ambitious. Ambition is what drives innovation. Besides, no one EVER thought about taking a lowly 1987 GXL that came originally as an automatic, dropping in a 20B-REW into it and setting the record for the lowest priced swap ever. Well, I did

Hi Akagis

While a 20b would make for a sick car, I'm going to crank out what ponies I can with a 13b. I'll see if I can find a thread with your build!

As for my car, she's Canadian (imported), black-on-black, PEP, 52k approx. miles, was originally built at KDR (now Speed1) in PA. Sadly, she gave up the ghost whilst playing nicely with some GTR's. She was rocking some slightly leaky 99 spec turbos..

New build is a heavier street port, BW S366, and enough fuel/water meth to shoot for the 500 club. I must give credit where it is due however. I could not do this without the help from people who know much more about these engines than I do..

Last thing.. I used to drive a miata

I'm a little confused as to what it takes to attain membership.. even after reading the rules..

IIRC, just join the group and one of the admins will take care of it.

Nice goal, a properly done single turbo swap can really benefit, especially with lowering underhood temps, while simplifying the vacuum lines a lot too. With the right tuning, 500hp is definitely doable.

My 20B isn't too 'shiny' per se, but there's good reason about why I kept its twins. It's hard to argue with full boost from 1800rpm to redline My eventual goal is 500+ too

If I could 'like' on rx7club, I would. Speaking of bay temps, I picked up a Greddy front mount, koyo rad, and deleting A/C.. battery relocate.. CF vented hood in the future.. I had a hard enough time trying to keep my temps down with the stock twins and a crowded bay..

Sounds like you're on the right path about cooling things down under the hood. If it makes you feel any better, my alternator's circuit breaker, mounted on the driver's side FAR AWAY from anything hot kept tripping prematurely from heat soak.

As far as the twins are concerned, did you have ALL of the heat shields in place? I'm missing the big one covering the turbine housing and the strut tower sheetmetal nearby gets to be quite uncomfortable to the touch, even after cooling down for 30min.

perhaps my build thread might give you some ideas. Here it is: https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...tormas-888195/

Akagis,

Wonderful thread.. one question, are you an engineer? Your appreciation for the technical details leads me to think that the answer is yes..

Not technically, but engineering is in my blood. My dad was an engineer for GM in the 60s and I seem to have inherited the "hey, let's try this out" and "we're gonna do something awesome today" mentality.

IMO, the best engineering is done by one whom sees each challenge as an opportunity to break the mold, do something new and isn't limited to just one train of thought or a specific brand of parts. It explains why I chose so many different parts, each on their own individual merits, all proven by the test of time by multiple sources.
