Lookin' for an FC to call my own
Hello, my fellow RX-7 enthusiasts! I'm pretty new to the whole car thing. I got my license last monday after five grueling years as a bicycle commuter, and now I'm just waiting on either my financial aid disbursement or a small loan approval from my bank so I can go get myself an RX-7! I've been checking the Portland area Craigslist 3~4 times a day for the last 2 weeks or so and I've found a few leads, but if anyone knows of a good, running RX-7 in the Portland area (or the Pacific NW in general; I'm planning a trip to Seattle later this month and could probably get a ride at least as far as Eugene, possibly down to Medford for a good deal) for sale under $2k, let me know! (I'm working on a student budget, so can't really go higher)
My current favourite is the '86 FC. I love the look of 80's Japanese sports cars, and I think 1986 was the perfect year. 240sx's, AE86's, and Supras from that year are just so damn sexy! None compare to the sleek form of the RX-7 though; factor in the unique and fluid beauty of the modest but powerful 1.3L rotary engine and you've got the perfect car (in my humble opinion)! I've been warned away from RX-7's on the premise that they're high-maintenance, prone to catastrophe, and tend to be project cars rather than daily drivers; but at the end of the day, I simply don't care. I've looked at MX-3's and just can't get behind an FF layout without feeling like I'm robbing myself of a balanced driving experience. I've looked at Miata's and they're just out of my price range (besides an Automatic for 1500 I saw a couple weeks ago that I probably should have just made an offer on), not to mention Portland's really not suitable for soft-tops, especially since I lack a garage right now. I've also tried considering other brands, but for whatever reason I seem to be a Mazda man, and I'm not gonna try to deny what I am, so the hunt goes on for my rotary soulmate! (in vehicle form)
So a little bit about me. I'm a student, a musician, and a deep rooted Portlandian. I'm a pretty serious bicyclist, though I've never owned a fixed-gear because my commute involves too many hills, so I might not be up to the hipster standards of some of my fellow Portlandians. I'm not really sure what the fate of my bicycle will be once I get a car, but I do intend to stay involved in bikefun events such as Zoobomb, Midnight Mystery Rides, and the Naked Bike Ride. I've never let anyone else do any maintenance on a bike I've owned (for better or worse), so I'm hoping that'll lend to me being a competent mechanic and I'll be able to do my own engine and body work without destroying my car. I'm taking a course this spring in "Maintaining your own car", so hopefully that will give me a good foundation to start from.
In the long term, my plan is to get into the drift scene. I've been playing racing games since I was 6, and my judgement of the quality of such games is almost always based largely on the game's drift mechanics. I expect this to carry over into my inevitable foray into motorsports once I get a little more comfortable behind the wheel (I've logged maybe 10 hours of driving so far...passed my drive test though no problem!), so all you RX-7 drifters in the northwest keep your eyes peeled for this guy right here. I don't know when I'll be able to start drifting, but it'll probably be as soon as I get a job and can fund such a hobby.
Another long term plan of mine is to get a Miata body, gut it, throw in a rotary engine and a VLSD, deck it out in Mazda logos, and dub it "RMX-573" (a subtle tribute to my notorious past as a competitive Bemani gamer). I'm still trying to come up with a useful component or two from the MX-3 which I could mod in to make the 3 relevant...any ideas? It's a ridiculous frankenstein project that I probably won't start for at least another 2~3 years, but it's never too early to start planning, right?
Anyway, that's me in a 4-paragraph nutshell. A little long-winded I suppose, but I'm a thorough guy; take it or leave it. I look forward to becoming a part of this awesome community and continuing to learn more about rotary engines and the ballin' dudes who drive them. If any of you guys are gamers like me, look for ChilliumBromide on LoL/Battle.net/XBL/minecraft/Steam, otherwise, just look for a dude with a crazy moustache, split hair (long on the right, short on the left), and a swanky 1986 RX-7 NA FC at drift meets in the not-so-distant future.

CB, good luck on your search. Long time FC owner (25 yrs) and sure hope you have as much fun and luck as I have had. Too bad you are not closer to the midwest as I may have had an '87 that may have interested you but at a bit higher price. Runs like a top.

I'm in between cars right now looking to get in to an FC. I've always loved RX7's, just haven't pulled the trigger on owning one yet.

I got one! It's ugly (paint's chipping, rust on the body) and doesn't run right now (it's got a bad water seal which should be a pretty easy fix) but it's a Black '87 N/A with an extra 13b motor that I'll be able to have the pleasure of putting back together myself when I can get the tools together to start working on it. I also just started a new job a few days ago so things are looking up for me at last.
