Yeah, I don't like airbags either. They are dangerous actually. I say just go with a racing wheel.
Though I have heard that second gen airbag systems in recent late model cars have two stages....the primary stage being much softer of a deployment.
Oh, and I am sure the control module for one would not work in an older car.

i remember i got into a crash a long time ago in a 240 and the airbag deployed at low speed and just kinda punched me in the face more than anything else. I think side airbags are really good though, saved my life once.

For those removing their airbags, from http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/airbags/brochure/
I don't know whether our FDs have these type of belts or not...
In some newer vehicles, turning off your air bag may have additional consequences. These vehicles have seat belts that were specially designed to work together with air bags. If the crash forces become too great, these new seat belts "give" or yield to avoid concentrating too much force on your chest. The air bag prevents you from moving too far forward after the seat belts give. Without the air bag to cushion this forward movement, the chance of the occupant hitting the vehicle interior is increased.
Ask your vehicle manufacturer whether your seat belts were specially designed to work with an air bag. If they were, your dealer or repair shop will provide you information about the effects that turning off your air bag will have on the performance of the belts. Ask your dealer or repair shop to show you this information before you decide whether to have an on-off switch installed.

no our fd's don't, that technology is from the early 00's maybe even later yet possibly 02+.... passenger side air bags were only introduced in late 93, early 94. So I don't see any FD having side airbags, not even 99's in Japan

if you cant go with the 99 spec, then go with an aftermarket wheel and harnesses. i personally like my Sparco 345 wheel... but thats just me. Nardi makes a lot of great wheels, including one specifically for the Rx-7.http://us1.webpublications.com.au/st.../1962_10mg.jpg

If you are so afraid, just put in a roll cage and a 4 or 5 point harness. I have the Momo steering wheel and it looks great. You would need to use the Momo hub from a 2nd gen to make it fit.
