Bose/Schosche Adapter
#77
so just a quick question...after reading through these 4 pages, can I not just go into a local audio shop and purchase an adapter that they carry and make it plug and play? or do I still have to mess around with the wiring to get it all working? lol
...i am hoping that after all the years the rx7 has been out, someone would get it right and produce a straight up plug and play harness for the bose system lol...

My headunit & adapter is showing up today.
Kenwood KDC-HD545U
OEM Amplifier Integration v.4 90-up Mazda
Long term I plan to replace the bose door speakers anyhow, but I'm waiting for the group buy on the adapters. Who knows how much longer that's gonna be. I'll probably leave the bose subwoofer in.
Will report back my success/failures.

I put my FD in storage for the winter but I figured I'd get the wiring ready for a quicker install once it warms up. I ordered everything from crutchfield. They sent a scosche OEA-4A adapter, and a male-male antenna adapater. Most of the wiring is pretty straight forward. This is untested, so I don't know if the amp wire is in the correct location in regards to the factor harness, but never the less you should connect it to the 12V switched wire. If you connect it to the antenna wire from the head unit, your speakers will likely not work when you're listening to cd's/ipod/etc.
1: This is the antenna power signal wire. Blue to Blue
2: This is the 12v switched power. Red to Red&Blue/white
3: There were 2 extra Orange & Orange/white wires for illumination & dimmer. I see no use for these.
Don't mind the black tape. Once it is teste & worked I will be soldering & shrink wrapping. I just don't want to short anything when I test.

I just had my new deck installed. the radio shop had no idea what to do with the bose system. they just used the simple mazda harness to the deck so only the front speakers work. Im hoping someone will make a harness plug and play adapter as well.

I tried to get my stereo installed today.
Here's some notes:
P-control (solid blue) wire from kenwood harness does NOTHING. Does not power amps or antenna.
Amp turn on (Blue/white) wire from kenwood harness sends power-on signal for amps or antenna when unit is turned on. I was hoping that the antenna would stay down when a cd/ipod was being played, instead of being up all the time. Kind of annoying IMO. I'm going to call crutchfield/kenwood tomorrow to verify.
I had to move the blue/white wire on the scosche adapter to turn on amp's (as expected from previous posts).
I cannot get music to play from radio. Crutchfield only sent 1 antenna adapter, but there are 2 antenna cables on the fd. any ideas?
I can only get sound through my rear sub. Front speakers are not playing. I know my drivers side speaker is bad, but passenger was working before winter. Maybe I'll directly connect a new speaker to verify.

What i did is buy a harness from walmart, it was around 7 dollars. The wiring harness were labeled so i just wired the cd player harness to the walmart harness took about 5 minutes with crimp connectors. I wired my speakers directly to my deck and bypassed the amps.

I installed my alpine hu today. Everything powers up, but no sound. I did the wire switch in the harness to kick the amps on but Crutchfield did not send an antenna adapter... This wouldn't affect the amps kicking on would it?
The main reason I replaced the stereo is because the stocker would not come on untill after the car was on for 20 min or so..... Crap now I'm thninking maybe the factory amps were the problem and would only come on after they warmed up... But I don't see how ALL of them would start this at the same time....

Quick question as I'm about to install my Pioneer tomorrow morning:
I got the Schosche adapter (Schosche C4MA02) from Crutchfield.
The tech @ Crutchfield told me this adapter is complete plug and play after I splice the Pioneer stereo harness to the Schosche. He noted the splicing is pretty straight forward except that the blue plug from the Pioneer splices into *both* the blue and blue & white on the Schosche. Everything else is plug and play on the FD side.
Is that right? Read a couple conflicting earlier posts that you will still need to do some splicing from the FD harnesses to the adapter itself. Was this the case with earlier Schosche adapter models? Will take some pics of the spliced Pioneer + Schosche when I get home.
Thanks

Bumping this thread with my experience from today. 93 with Bose system. HU was basically wasted. Speakers and amps seemed to be fine. Anyway ordered a new HU and adapter from Crutchfield. As delivered the amps would not work. You need to de-pin one of the blue wires on the Scoshe adapter and put it in the spot 3 pins over. I figured this out using the Bose wiring diagram. It had also been mentioned in a previous post.

I installed a Pioneer DEH-X7800BHS last weekend to replace my stock Bose system. I ordered from Crutchfield and it came with the Scosche C4MA02 Wiring Interface.
While Crutchfield will say that this is "Plug and Play", it is not, as others have noted. If you call Crutchfield, they will give you proper instructions for moving pins around to be FD RX-7-specific--I wonder why they don't just print it out and send it to you when you order.
I verified all the pinouts with the factory wiring diagram. To corroborate/clarify the descriptions given here by others, here are some pictures and diagrams. I put them on Imgur for ease of distribution, but have attached them below as well.
In case they're ever removed from imgur, the most important parts to know are that the blue/white wire in the small connector needs to be moved to pin 10 on the larger connector. This is the remote amp line from the head unit to the Bose amps. Without this, the bose amps will not turn on.
Also, the orange wire on the large connector can be removed--it is an extra.
Lastly, the existing blue wire on the large connector (pin 7) is in the proper location to activate the stock powered antenna. If your radio doesn't have provision for controlling a powered antenna (it seems to be uncommon these days ), you have options:
1. Tie it in to the remote amp line, which means your antenna will be up whenever the stereo is powered on.
2. Wire a switch on the power antenna line so that you can control the antenna manually.
I chose option #2. I had an extra fog light switch, so I installed it in the blank switch location on the center console. Mazda uses the same wiring harness for all cars it seems, as that blank switch does have a connector underneath it. two of the wires were live for illumination, so that was awesome--I was able to get the extra fog light to light up with the light switch. The other two wires have no voltage on them though in my US-spec car--no +12VDC constant or switched. So I ended up running +12VDC switched from the Scosche harness back to the new fog light switch, and then back up to the blue wire in pin 7. So, now I can switch on the antenna whenever I want to. A lot of trouble for something I'm never going to use--I never listen to the radio.
I also don't think any new radios have provision for taking advantage of diversity antenna setups, so the rear glass antenna is unused in my setup.
